Wayne's Crazy Deck Project - DONE!!!
After about four months of non-continuous work on this thing, it's finally finished. I'm very proud of how this turned out, especially considering that I've never quite tackled a job this large before. It's about 99% done - there are just a few cleanup things that I need to do on it over the next few weeks. I had some people experienced in construction take a look at the design / construction of the deck, and they think it's way overbuilt, which is great - means I can sleep fine at night. A majority of the deck's supports are sitting on actual little shelves in the concrete that are part of the pool - very, very secure. Oh, for those who didn't see the original thread, I've built a deck inside of a swimming pool:

will the underground be available as a fort when the kids get older? Great for hide and seek or cover while playing war...
|
Nice work.

Sheesh, you sound old. ;) |
very cool, a deck with catacombs. the kids can play phantom of the opera.
|
Two words,
WINE CELLAR! |
Now all you need is a small 120v sump pump down there to keep the swamp water from piling up... Great work Wayne, looks nice....

Did you get a bilge pump Wayne? |
Looks very nice! All that work was worth it!
Where did you get the gazebo thing? Can you give me a link? I see a shop vac in the pics - is that the "sump pump"? |

The downstairs is creepy in a "Silence Of The Lambs" kind of way.
I think Wayne's competitors will end up down there. |
Gives me an idea.... run some electrical down there... cover the top with dirt and sod.... make a secret entrance... you have the ultimate bunker.....
|
Looks like an excellent place to store munitions. ;)
The deck looks great. I love the non-orthagonal edges of the wood butting up to the concrete. It gives a nice organic feel to it. Much more visually interesting than a typical circle, oval or rectangle. I know that's mostly driven by the original shape of the pool, but it looks nicer than I thought it would originally. For added accenting you could add a few planter boxes too, but it really did turn out nicely. And yes, that looks pretty overbuilt, which is good. Is there any provision for ventilation under there? Just through the slats (should be adequate). |
Wow! Outstanding job. It looks really nice.
I have no doubt that it's way over built. Have you tried parking a 914 or 911 on it? That would be a good test. ;) |
Okay - You need to increase the size of your "tester". Perhaps a few 350 lb longshoreman.
Looks nice. I see a huge potential for storage too. I think flood/flurescent lights down there would make it look 'wicked' at night. Eventually you do need to let the kids swim. :) |

I saw this and walked on it last week, it is very solid and well-constructed. Great Pelican DIY spirit, I don't think that it would have been possible to hire someone who would have done better. The underneath part is very clean and dry, I immediately thought storage of some kind but, A) it's going to rain here eventually and, B) Wayne is not hurting for space in this house. ;)
Count me among the people who did not think it would come out this well, glad to be proven wrong however. |

He only needs one of those if he decides to pull the pool out of the ground and launch it into the pacific... lol:D |
Wayne, that came out great! You should be very pleased with yourself.
|
I approve the outcome of this thread. :D

I looked the first few pictures and though "looks like a pool of deck"... and then... what do ya know!
Definitely cool. How are those concrete footings anchored into the pool bottom Wayne? |

I hope the supporting structure was engineered to handle about 3 feet of top soil -- 3 feet of packed soil will give pretty good protection from most of the radioactive fallout from most nuclear bombs. It would be best to probably use the wood structure to support a steel reinforced 12-16 inch slab, then build the rest up with soil. |
Wow, very cool. Underneath looks like a future episode of Ghost Hunters.:D
|
needs a slot car set up and some really cool seats while your running the cars !
oh and a KeGoratOR for the wIN ! |
I love it. And when the kids are old enough to say "Hey Dad.... Can we have a pool....".

If I had a backyard like that, instead of a deck I'd probably put in a pool......
|
Yeah, looks great, but is it sturdy? J/K:) I'm with the others though on the fascination of the under-deck space.
Seeing the ladder coming from below reminded me of a scene from a Cheech and Chong movie, and that lead me to another thought of a use for the space. |

Okay - so when is the party?

Nice job, not sure why you wanted to fill in your pool; but it's a super looking first class job of doing so. Great outdoor living space! Congrats.
|
All the stringers kills any possibility of cool use of the underdeck space- but they are necessary.
It is a very unique look on the topside. My folks have surrounded their large in-ground pool on one side with a large stained deck that connects on another level to the main house deck. It is rather elaborate as well. They have more deckspace than they know what to do with. |
Cute kid. Make it so you need a screw gun to get the hatch open.
|
Nice job Wayne!
|
Excellent work there, Wayne!
|
pool>deckthing imo
|
You filled up a perfectly good skateboard park! ;)
It looks great, enjoy it! |
