Wayne's Crazy Deck Project - DONE!!!

After about four months of non-continuous work on this thing, it's finally finished. I'm very proud of how this turned out, especially considering that I've never quite tackled a job this large before. It's about 99% done - there are just a few cleanup things that I need to do on it over the next few weeks. I had some people experienced in construction take a look at the design / construction of the deck, and they think it's way overbuilt, which is great - means I can sleep fine at night. A majority of the deck's supports are sitting on actual little shelves in the concrete that are part of the pool - very, very secure. Oh, for those who didn't see the original thread, I've built a deck inside of a swimming pool:

will the underground be available as a fort when the kids get older? Great for hide and seek or cover while playing war...

island911 11-22-2008 02:22 PM

Nice work.

As if kids go outside to play war...

Sheesh, you sound old. ;)

onlycafe 11-22-2008 02:23 PM

very cool, a deck with catacombs. the kids can play phantom of the opera.

scottmandue 11-22-2008 02:33 PM

Two words,

WINE CELLAR!

futuresoptions 11-22-2008 02:33 PM

Now all you need is a small 120v sump pump down there to keep the swamp water from piling up... Great work Wayne, looks nice....

I thought Wayne was working on that.

Did you get a bilge pump Wayne?

jyl 11-22-2008 02:58 PM

Looks very nice! All that work was worth it!

Where did you get the gazebo thing? Can you give me a link?

I see a shop vac in the pics - is that the "sump pump"?

Yes, I got an auto-sensing one from Lowes, should work well!

Kids hell, Wayne & pals will be using it, I know that I would!!!

jyl 11-22-2008 03:16 PM

The downstairs is creepy in a "Silence Of The Lambs" kind of way.

I think Wayne's competitors will end up down there.

futuresoptions 11-22-2008 03:24 PM

Gives me an idea.... run some electrical down there... cover the top with dirt and sod.... make a secret entrance... you have the ultimate bunker.....

Porsche-O-Phile 11-22-2008 03:29 PM

Looks like an excellent place to store munitions. ;)

The deck looks great. I love the non-orthagonal edges of the wood butting up to the concrete. It gives a nice organic feel to it. Much more visually interesting than a typical circle, oval or rectangle. I know that's mostly driven by the original shape of the pool, but it looks nicer than I thought it would originally. For added accenting you could add a few planter boxes too, but it really did turn out nicely.

And yes, that looks pretty overbuilt, which is good.

Is there any provision for ventilation under there? Just through the slats (should be adequate).

masraum 11-22-2008 03:32 PM

Wow! Outstanding job. It looks really nice.

I have no doubt that it's way over built. Have you tried parking a 914 or 911 on it? That would be a good test. ;)

notmytarga 11-22-2008 04:13 PM

Okay - You need to increase the size of your "tester". Perhaps a few 350 lb longshoreman.

Looks nice. I see a huge potential for storage too. I think flood/flurescent lights down there would make it look 'wicked' at night.

Eventually you do need to let the kids swim. :)

Around here, we call that a sump pump. :DSmileWavy

speeder 11-22-2008 04:51 PM

I saw this and walked on it last week, it is very solid and well-constructed. Great Pelican DIY spirit, I don't think that it would have been possible to hire someone who would have done better. The underneath part is very clean and dry, I immediately thought storage of some kind but, A) it's going to rain here eventually and, B) Wayne is not hurting for space in this house. ;)

Count me among the people who did not think it would come out this well, glad to be proven wrong however.

He only needs one of those if he decides to pull the pool out of the ground and launch it into the pacific... lol:D

Hugh R 11-22-2008 05:26 PM

Wayne, that came out great! You should be very pleased with yourself.

trekkor 11-22-2008 05:43 PM

I approve the outcome of this thread. :D

I looked the first few pictures and though "looks like a pool of deck"... and then... what do ya know!

Definitely cool. How are those concrete footings anchored into the pool bottom Wayne?

That's what I was thinking too!

I hope the supporting structure was engineered to handle about 3 feet of top soil -- 3 feet of packed soil will give pretty good protection from most of the radioactive fallout from most nuclear bombs.

It would be best to probably use the wood structure to support a steel reinforced 12-16 inch slab, then build the rest up with soil.

Whtnkls911 11-22-2008 07:08 PM

Wow, very cool. Underneath looks like a future episode of Ghost Hunters.:D

Jim Bremner 11-22-2008 07:43 PM

needs a slot car set up and some really cool seats while your running the cars !

oh and a KeGoratOR for the wIN !

Bill Douglas 11-22-2008 07:55 PM

I love it. And when the kids are old enough to say "Hey Dad.... Can we have a pool....".

It puts the lotion on the skin, or else it gets the hose again

Chuck Moreland 11-22-2008 08:02 PM

If I had a backyard like that, instead of a deck I'd probably put in a pool......

bivenator 11-22-2008 08:35 PM

Yeah, looks great, but is it sturdy? J/K:) I'm with the others though on the fascination of the under-deck space.
Seeing the ladder coming from below reminded me of a scene from a Cheech and Chong movie, and that lead me to another thought of a use for the space.

"We're playing 'Lambs'."

mikester 11-22-2008 09:31 PM

Okay - so when is the party?

911Rob 11-22-2008 10:26 PM

Nice job, not sure why you wanted to fill in your pool; but it's a super looking first class job of doing so. Great outdoor living space! Congrats.

Schumi 11-23-2008 01:16 AM

All the stringers kills any possibility of cool use of the underdeck space- but they are necessary.

It is a very unique look on the topside. My folks have surrounded their large in-ground pool on one side with a large stained deck that connects on another level to the main house deck. It is rather elaborate as well. They have more deckspace than they know what to do with.

DanielDudley 11-23-2008 01:52 AM

Cute kid. Make it so you need a screw gun to get the hatch open.

Tim Hancock 11-23-2008 04:14 AM

Nice job Wayne!

azasadny 11-23-2008 04:29 AM

Excellent work there, Wayne!

rtoms 11-23-2008 05:24 AM

You filled up a perfectly good skateboard park! ;)
It looks great, enjoy it!
