The Perils of Facebook

So my friends wanted me to join facebook. I created an account, that's it, nothing more.

I've kept in touch with all my friends from college that I ever wanted to remain friends with, and we are all close, even though we live all around the country. Thanksgiving in MN is a ritual I cherish every year with one of them.

But now one of my goofball "friends" from college (a guy you sort of liked and he hung on to the group, but wasn't always invited to festivities, etc.) just added me as a friend and I've got to confirm it. This is the same jerk who was jealous of my my gf at the time and did everything he could to break us up. (found this out later) Yeah, not much of a friend. And I have no interest at all in seeing him now.

What's the best course of action here? Ignore him? Reject the invitation outright? Accept, go through a bit of the motion, keep him at a distance, let it fade away...

What's the proper protocol?

I don't know the protocal, as I just joined it myself, at the urging of some of my track buddies, and turns out there is a Pelican group too. Just ignore him.

I'm kind of in the same boat.. I recently created a FB account and sure lots of good friends and others that I can't really remember who they are... I've been accepting all.. just not writing to all..

What I'm finding is that I have nothing to say.. I mean we're worlds apart. What do you say after 20 or more years of not even remembering their name:
Soo.. what's up with you?

I canceled my facebook account recently because I learned that pictures of me involving copious amounts of drugs and alcohol at college are not deemed appropriate to future employers. Who knew?

If you have such a strong dislike for him why lie about it, ignore him and or tell him you don't consider him a friend, he most likely knows he was an *********.

Not really a difficult decision.

You can "friend" him and then turn around and "un-friend" him. He won't know that he can't communicate with you anymore via Facebook. You can alternatively set limits on what he can send. It's kind of like a "limited" friend.

Good luck,
Michael.

Speaking of Facebook, is there any interest here in starting a Pelican Parts group like the one at LinkedIn?

huh, I beg to differ;

for facebook, it really doesn't matter. Even once you friend him, there's no obligation to look at any of the crap he sends you... its almost the same as just giving him your email address, the only other thing it lets them do is see your profile, which if they know you [gender, birthdate, photo if you like] they probably already know. The way I see it, I don't post anything personal up there, and I only ignore requests if I don't know the person.
also, you can always un-friend if they start to be a pain in the ass

I used to accept every friend request (more friends = cooler). I would just ignore his messages and if he asks, claim you cant respond to every message or you never go on facebook. Better than dealing with "why dont you want to be my friend?" In my experience, a facebook friend does not constitute a real friendship anyway, more of an awareness of the other person's existence or inclusion in some sort of broad, common social network.

Shaun, make sure you let the Minnesota Pelicans know when you're making the trek back up here. There might be a cold frosty one with your name on it at someplace like Kieran's.

I just "friended" a couple Pelicans on FB. And within 10 minutes they confirmed. What are you guys, hardwired into this network? My wife has become addicted, as well. Within about a week.
