IT - Hardware help please - 2nd drive IDE to SATA on SATA Mboard

Hi guys. Some of you may remember my computer installed XP service pack 3 on my P4 1.5 Ghz machine a while back.

We'll I managed to remove the SP3, but then nothing seemed to work write with my computer. Ultimately, it failed to boot up. So I took it to a place I normally buy PC stuff from and instead of paying to get it repaired I bought a refurbished P4 3.0 Ghz XP machine for what it would have cost to repair my old one.

Anyhow, the new motherboard is all SATA drive connections. My old drive is an IDE drive and I want to use set it up as a slave and pull data from it.

I have an IDE to SATA adapter for the hard drive. I plugged everything in and the PC wouldn't boot up. It would let me go into setup, but I'm stuck there.

I put the jumper on the IDE drive to "slave." Should I do that with a SATA motherboard?

How do I configure the drive to ignore the IDE drive on bootup and only refer to it as a data drive?

Reboot the Computer get to the CMOS setup. Since I have no clue on the computer/MB, I Can't tell you were, but there should be an option somewhere to change the boot order.

But if you are typing from the computer, then did you fix your own problem?

On most modern computers, the boot order does not show SATA1, SATA2, PATA1... It will show the model number of the drive i.e. STM3160812A (Maxtor).

I haven't fixed the problem. I removed the second drive that I wanted to install, which is the IDE drive that I have a SATA adapter on.

I'm going to set the jumper on the IDE drive to Master, and try it again. The reboot will work or I'll go into setup and find out the boot order.

It was

1-CD
2-floppy
3-SATA HD

I changed the order to

1-HD
2-CD
3-Floppy

Still won't boot right. It recognizes the SATA, but not the IDE converted to SATA drive.

In the Setup menu,

It lists 6 drives:
0-SATA-0
1-SATA-1
2-SATA-2
3-SATA-3
4-PATA-0
5-PATA-1

I have the IDE-SATA drive plugged into the SATA-3 port.

I cannot find PATA-0 and PATA-1 on the motherboard...I can only find the SATA ports.

I'm now typing on a laptop and the desktop being worked on is in setup mode.

Really appreciated the help....I'd like to get my data off the old drive.

Yeah...I was hoping to get that adapter to work after paying $20 for it.

I got the computer to boot up after I enabled all the drives. But it won't recognize the IDE-SATA drive. Any tips, Dave?

One last thing. Turn off all SATA except 0 and make sure both PATA devices are enabled in CMOS.

Got it to work serially with the DVD drive Dave! You are the man.

So now the drive is readable, yet the documents under "user" are locked. Probably because the old PC was set to ask for a password on start up. How do I go in there to retrive the data?

Glad it works!

Is the new OS Vista? And what was the old OS?

Old OS was XP Home, and the new OS is XP Pro.

You suppose I could set the PC to boot from the old drive and dump data to another drive via USB? Will the PC boot on the old drive and be just like the old PC?

Naw, right click on "user"-> Properties -> select "Security" tab. Make sure the user Everybody is added to the Group or user names. Give Everyone Full Control. Let me know what happens.

Gives me the "General" "Sharing" and "Customize" tabs.

On the Sharing tab, it states "To share this folder with other users of this computer only, drag it to the "Shared Documents" folder. When I do that, it it denies it.
