Plaxico Burress
Looks like he ain't playing any ball for the Giants this year
Thought there would be thread about this, what do you bet Mr Burress gets off pretty light on his gun charges? Isn't it generally illegal to take a gun into a place where they serve booze, even with a concealed carry permit? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/12/02/burress.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

I think just the opposite...the anti 2nd amendment officialdom of NY will make an example of him...he's facing some pretty hard time, IMO.

3.5 years mandatory - he's done for a while.
As a lifelong Giants fan, this sucks, but the team did the right thing today.

Seems pretty silly that he carries it for protection and then ends up shooting himself with it. I think he needs to catch a gun safety course and also spend some time on the playbook as well. So far he has been lucky but that luck may have just run out!

Our local radio station did a funny little spoof on this. It had plaxico playing little "Ralphie" from the classic movie "A Christmas Story". When Plaxico asks for a gun for x mas, the reply is "You'll shoot your thigh out" Good Stuff

Another example of Thugball.
I am quickly losing my taste for pro athletics. College is much more fun. Everybody is trying for that elusive berth in the league and go all out, or they play for fun. The NFL is becoming a place for well paid thugs with huge ego's. I just don't have the desire for that. my .02

One does not trifle with the gun laws in NYC. There are EXTREMELY onerous LEGAL means of obtaining a premises or even concealed carry permit here. Those who comply do so at enormous cost of time and expense. You think Bloomberg is going to roll over on this? The guy who hired Private Investigators to go down to Virginia and pose as straw man purchasers? He's going to get the Martha Stewart treatment.

Bloomberg is the Mayor, as such, his comments are media grandstanding, simple as that

He'll serve time. Too high profile and regardless whether Bloomberg is grandstanding, he'll be made an example of. 40 cal. - he's lucky he didn't do more damage or shoot someone else.

I despise Bloomberg. He switched to Republican to get himself elected then went "independent" (Democrat) as soon as that scam worked. Now he is trying to get himself a lifetime appointment (removing term limits) like his idol King Richard II of Chicago. He has no respect for the Constitution, in particular the Second Amendment.
I completely understand why Burress would want to carry a gun. NFL players have been very public victims of several crimes (including murder) lately. The question should be why is he being deprived of--and prosecuted for exercising--the right to self defense. His only punishment should be his medical bills.

Basically you have to show that you are handling cash, or work in security, or that there is a reasonable likelihood that you will be required to defend yourself with lethal force, a fairly high bar. Then it takes about 6 months to get the permit, not because it takes that long to process, but because a federal judge in the 1960s said that longer than 6 months would be "unreasonable." For everyone else, a "premises" license for a long gun or handgun is just a matter of going through the administrative process, trekking out to Queens, getting the application, paying the fees and waiting. In any event, he, or his security staff, could have probably qualified to lawfully carry incident to their protection of their principal. Fact is, he did not avail himself of the lawful route and will be prosecuted as a result. The facts are NOT that he had a lawfully obtained permit in another jurisdiction and was "in transit" or that he had a lawfully obtained permit in NYC and was still being prosecuted in contravention of his Second Amendment rights. Even the most ardent Civil Liberterians, myself included, agree that there should be reasonable limitations on the ability to carry a concealed weapon in public. No bank, no airport, no gun shop, no Latin Quarter nightclub!
