Not quite- the point was all in how the car is used.

Obviously putting around town the Prius would do much better, but on a track the Prius was at 10/10ths, the M3 probably at 3/10ths.

Likewise, if you put a loaded trailer behind a Prius vs. a Tahoe I'll bet the Tahoe gets better MPG.

Not everyone can afford a different car for each need- so they buy one vehicle that can do all of it. Paying a lot for gas is still cheaper than buying another vehicle.

Wow that is really insane.

We're holding onto our LR Discovery (10 mpg average) and driving it more often now that gas is under $2.00/gal. Last summer a fill cost ~ $115 and now it's $45. My Audi TT (25 mpg average) is my DD.

I highly doubt the increase of SUVs at the pumps these days reflect short term memory loss. Most of my neighbors have kept their SUVs rather than "giving them away" when gas was really expensive. They're just using them more now that gas is so cheap.

edit - well I started reading the news about SUV sales and I guess I was wrong. People are pretty short sighted.

Apples to orange comparisons (esp. when people take the joking ones seriously) just annoy the crap out of me. Why not have the M3 go through stop and go traffic?

Hybrid SUV vs regular SUV? As in, something that would actually produce usable data.

Some of you people need to lighten up- sheesh. Economy cars suck- period. You can't haul friends and your dog in one up to the mountains. You can't tow a trailer or a boat, or bring home new furniture.

The SUV signifies everything that is great about America. It matters not the vehicle, but the driver in it when it comes to fuel economy, safety, etc.

I see a lot of generalizations about SUV drivers- why aren't you guys complaining about black people? When I go into town I see them driving 76 Chevys with 24 inch wheels- what kind of fuel economy are they getting? They never upgrade the brakes either so you know they can't stop. Imagine the pollution too!

You don't complain and stereotype because you aren't jealous of them.

Shoot- I just saw on Top Gear last night an M3 followed a Prius around the track for 10 laps. The M3 got 2 mpg BETTER than the Prius.

Some of you guys need to get with the program- if you want a world where other people can judge you and determine how large of a car you NEED, the next step is to tell you how fast (slow) a car you NEED.

If Lamborghinis were cheap we'd all be driving them and they get 12 mpg so suck it.

Gas prices will remain low until dealers can sell off all the SUV's which are collecting dust on their lots. Clear the inventory and then the price will go back towards 75$ a barrel.

Have you ever watched Top Gear? It's a show for enthusiasts. The show you are looking for is AutoWeek...

I think it's silly to say that SUVs are bad. They can be the right tool for the right job, just like a Porsche 911 or a Toyota Prius. The problem is that a ton of people bought into the rugged, he-man, I'm goin' camping dream and then drove solo only to Starbucks and the only time they went off-road is when they rolled it exiting the highway too fast.

The right tool for the right job. Live it.

SUVs - it's not just the inherent lousy gas mileage, it's the size of these monsters. When trying to make a left-hand turn in your little Porsche cars while facing a Yukon in front of you that's also trying to turn left the opposite direction - can you see around the Yukon? Can you see around it even if you were in a standard-sized sedan or wagon? How about parking at the mall or hardware store? The parking spaces are getting more narrow, and the SUVs are growing wider.

Sure, they have a purpose. Or did. But with sports wagons that get better mileage, are faster, and handle better such as the BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, to name a few, which also carry nearly as much cargo, the SUV is, IMO, eclipsed on the functionality front.

Sounds like you're not a target customer, I wouldn't buy one if I were you

I'd buy a V10 Touareg...maybe. But honestly, it looks like as much can fit in a Fit as a Touareg. Of course, a Fit can't do this:

Just got back from Target. The wife and I walking through the parking lot are stopped dead in our tracks while a women by her lonesome, in a Escalade, has to make a 4 point turn just to get out of the parking space. This happens all the time, comical.

Actually a Tourag has 71cuft of cargo space and a Fit has 41cuft(rear seats down). But who's counting.

You are, obviously.

30 cubic feet? What's that hold? A case of diet Coke?

Here's some real math: How many Fits fit in the cost of one V10 Touareg?

Could be, considering a Fit only holds 21cuft with the seats up I hope you're not a big soda drinker

You wanna talk MPG and cubic feet? Swallow your pride and buy a minivan. Car MPG, more room inside than an SUV. If you have a family, there is no better vehicle on earth.

I didn't bring storage space up, just clarifying an inaccurate statement.

No worries. I'd be willing to bet that the maintenance costs on a Toureq would more than cover the payments for a new Fit. From what I hear, they make a Jetta look reliable.

Most people in L.A. don't go up to the mountains. Granted you can tell which has a big family by those stupid family stickers you see in the back window, but most around here are driven by soccer moms that wouldn't know how to put the SUV into 4 wheel drive (assuming it's a 4X model).

In L.A., lack people don't drive 76 Chevys with 24" rims, they drive gigantic SUV's, some that have enormous rims, most are just normal sized 'bling' rims. Same with Mexicans, Asians.. Well, a lot of Asians are into the ricer thing.

I'm not jealous. If I needed an SUV or truck, I'd buy one.
