Crock Pot Sales in 2009

I predict a lot of crock pots will be sold in 2009. Great for taking cheap, tough cuts of meat and making wonderful comfort food out of them that only get better 2 days later warming up a tupperware full for lunch.

I woke up thinking of a country-style sparerib cacciatore with lasagna noodles layered on the bottom, an entire layer of roasted garlic and a little ricotta on the plate.

What are your crock pot recipes?

I like to get a big hunk of pork and smoke it on the grill for 7-10 hours. I put it in the fridge overnight. The next day I put it in the crockpot with a beer and a shot of whiskey. When the meat is falling apart, I drain it, shred it with two forks and throw it back in the crock pot with some BBQ sauce (usually Famous Dave's Texas Pit). A half-hour later I have some fabulous BBQ pulled pork.

i just made a green mexican stew a few weeks back. made some enchaladas out of it, frooze some, and will enjoy it again later this week maybe.

the flat out BEST cooking appliance ive ever had is one of those electric chicken spinner deals. ive had mine for about 6 years and bet ive cooked 200 birds on it. i would eat some of the bird on night one and from there make chinese chicken salad, burritos, sandos, or just rip a chunk off while standing in front of the fridge after a few many beers.

good vittles.

They work nice but I dont trust them. Seen too many fires caused by them. I dont like leaving appliances like that unattended.

Shan, didnt mean to scare you. They are safe when they are used properly. The few fires ive seen where either caused by defects in the unit itself, the contents inside drying up and the pot cracking, or misplacement. People put them on the counter underneath cabinets. They shouldnt generate enough heat to ignite anything but it has happened. UL wouldnt certify them if they didnt pass the safety requirements. But ***** can still happen.
Hey, any appliance can malfunction and cause a fire. But I guess I'm just paranoid since ive been a firefighter. I just dont like leaving any cooking appliance unattended when I'm not home. I dont even like when my wife leaves the clothes dryer running when she goes out. I've just seen too much happen over the years.

The two best things that have ever happened in my life were my Mom and Dad - both depression kids, both grew up without fathers (they dies of TB) and both could weather anything life threw at them and smiled about it.

If we are heading for a depression, I hope those who pull threw it become people like them.

Lamb (muttin) stew is really good as well...

pork shoulder, juice of an orange, bottle of BBQ sauce, cook on low all day, take a few forks and shred it up, make sandwiches, yummy

chili is good too, idiot proof is get a bag of the Carrol Shelby mix, cook it up and you are good to go

my wife made some baked potato soup that was pretty damn good, will hunt up the recipe, which came out of a book she got for a quarter at a yard sale

Definitely post the soup recipe

We had 2 kinds of pot roast when I was a kid. Mushroom soup based, and stewed tomato based. Both were very good.

I read this as "Crack Pot Sales in 2009" which, strangely enough, also probably applies.

I bought a crock pot on sale 2 months ago. It's awesome for lazy people like me. I threw some cheap beef roast, onions, spices, and gravy mix in it a while back and just let it go. That night I came home to a delicious dinner.

I have also done hot wings in mine. And chili is good. A thick, mild chili with cheese and a Dos Equis Ambar to go with. mm.

i hate crock pots. they take up too much storage space.

plus for stews, the veggies are mush when the meat is tender. it still takes a two pronged attack to make a great stew. (roast veggies separate, and put them in later). i guess i am not skilled in the tool.

personally, i use my enameled dutch oven in my regular oven and achieve the same thing. i cranked out an osso bucco the other night that was rockin!

You can make country style spare ribs in a pressure cooker in about 20 minutes, instead of eight hours in a crock pot. I didn't notice any difference in flavor or tenderness.

2 C chix broth, can put in half onion soup mix to taste
1 t parsley
1 t salt
1/2 t pepper
1/2 t basil
diced potatoes, or frozen hash browns if you are more lazy than cheap, put in plenty, keep in mind it will cook down some even though it has a lid
1/2 chopped onion

cook 3 hours on high( I have done it on low all day)
mix in

1 1/4 C cream or half and half
1/4 cup flour
cook on high 30 min

serve with shredded cheese, personally I prefer cheddar. Swiss has nice flavor, but is too stringy, so the consistency is wrong, crumbled bacon bits, chopped chives or green onions, whatever crap you like on baked potato essentially, just the ticket if you are wanting some carbs on a cold day

That is similar to a recipe I always do with ribeyes. Peel potatoes, make a base on one side lengthwise. 1mm cuts all the down, but not completely through the potato. Press down and fan the potatoes, arrange in a baking dish. separate bowl, add heavy cream, chopped garlic, nutmeg, salt and pepper and room temp soft butter. mix well, pour over potatoes covering them with the heavy cream mixture. Bake at 350 for 2hours covered with foil. Grate some good quality gruyere cheese and sprinkle liberally on top. Brown for 30 minutes. Serve.

My wife uses our crockpot several times a week, especially during the school year when she's working all day. Chili in a crockpot is pretty good!
