Oh, Gawd: it happened again...someone's stalking my Porsche!

I came home tonight to find a note taped to rear windshield of my car. It read as stated:

"Hi, if your Porsche is for sale, please call me. Ask for ----"

Two phone #s was included in the note - a home and cell.

Quite frankly, with the current economy and how I can't justify track days, let alone fun runs, my car has been downgraded to weekend driving, and very little at that.

I guess what I'm saying is, it's very tempting. But I have a feeling I'll never get the price I want if I do sell, which I'm not really thinking of doing...

This is about the fourth or fifth time people have left notes on my car, asking me if I would sell it. One guy from San Francisco occasionally stops by to offer trades for mine plus cash for whatever 996 he's driving at the time. I always shake my head "no."

The culprit, btw:

I love this car. I know there will never be another like it, but...

Just realize that if you sell it, you may not have another P-car again. Or, worse. You might become like me, not wanting another P-car again.

'74 Carrera (wannabe) with a better-than-Carrera engine, suspension, interior, etc.

Thanks for the compliment.

Mmmmm yellow! If I had $1 for every time Paul brought that up, I'd definitely make you an offer.

I hear ya. I don't drive mine in the winter or rain so it's a part time car. If someone was stalking mine I'd probably let it go if the offer was fair. I guess mine isn't nice enough for a stalker!

You live in CA, drive the damn thing to work. It's not like you have to worry about it getting snowed on. Hell, it doesn't even rain, you don't even have to worry about water spots. It's a car. If you feel like you aren't using it enough, drive it.

I'm still working on building a 911 that's equivalent to the one that was totaled two Novembers ago. As I get older, my spare time decreases. Anyway.......I had completely gone through that car. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING was cleaned up and inspected or replaced. Engine and tranny freshened, suspension.....everything down to the small details. The paint was nowhere near perfect or even "good," but the car was mechanically perfect.

Insurance company hosed me for about $9K value. Ridiculous. The point I am making here is that a well-sorted 911 is probably going to be your most reliable car. When the others fail you, grab the 911 key. To me, that kind of reliability is more valuable than the typical SC selling price. In my humble opinion, particularly given how fun these cars are to drive, a well-sorted 911 cannot be sold for its real value. I suspect that if my car had not been hit, I could have driven her until the end of my life without doing ANYTHING to it.

Serious question here; I have heard stories like this many times.

Is there anything that can be done insurance-wise to prevent this from happening? Some kind of way to insure your car for what it is actually worth... or "worth to you"... pick a dollar amount?

If it is some kind of classic or collector car insurance... is that insanely expensive?

BTW... dd74, that is a beautiful car... love the ride height. Kudos.

Hey, wait a minute... does dd74 mean "daily driver 74?"

A lot of collector car insurance has "stated value". But it typically it comes with mileage limits.

I am like you DD, I have had the same thing happen with the turbo, but..I have spent some serious time and money getting it to where I want it. Now that it is winter, I don't drive it very often either....

That's a fine looking car dd.

My advice?

You'll know when you're ready to part with it. Just follow your gut. If it causes you more headaches or worries than it gives you pleasure, get rid of it.

It's just a car. And the world is full of interesting cars.

Well, it does rain. Sometimes quite a bit.

And my worry revolves around crappy drivers, soccer moms on cell phones in Escalades who wander into my lane, Oh, and the roads here are ass, plain and simple.

Have you taken a drive on our beloved Mulholland between Laurel Canyon and the 405 Freeway? Despite its lore, it's by far the sh!!t!iest kept canyon road in L.A. I can hardly drive it in my 911, let alone many other cars.

Regardless of these mid-morning lamentations, I will drive it today as the sis-n-law has my truck, because her key broke in her Bimmer ($700 replacement). As well, the 911 will be tagging along to tonight's gathering. Be sure and make me an offer.

That's the worst part. The car is so dialed in, it's virtually maintenance free. All you need to do to get it running on a cold morning is pull up the hand throttle. Otherwise, it starts, goes, runs cool, drives well.

It's the most reliable four-wheel machine I've ever owned.

More reliable than your ML320CDI? Surely not.
