We're #1! We're #1!
http://www.kansas.com/196/story/667719.html
...........in the nation for tornados. 187 for 2008, #2 Texas had a mere 116. I am so proud.

Used to vacation at grandparents house in Kansas... I remember watching the radar map on TV.
Also remember firefly's... katydids... mini bikes... riding lawn mower... seeing bull/cow do the nasty... first and only time I saw a hornets nest (once is enough). Great experience for a city boy.

Sadly I've lived here my entire life and never seen one. Lots of funnel clouds, but never seen one on the ground. While I don't ever want to be in the path of one, I would love to see one in person. It's always been a fascination of mine. In a somewhat sadistic way, I really enjoy storm season. Watching a funnel cloud approach when the wind suddenly gets still, the temperature drops 20 deg, with the sirens wailing.........pretty cool. When mother nature gets pissed, it's an awesome experience.

It's all suck and blow, and then you lose your house. Wait, that's something entirely different.

# 1 in tornados: that is one title you can have. However, if you throw in our 2 hurricanes this year I suspect we win the damage title going away.... and that truly is a dubious distinction.

I'm actually surprised by how few of you in the Midwest have seen a twister up close. 25 years in Illinois and I've seen at least 10 with my own eyes.
Maybe Kansas isn't so "twister-hardcore" as they think
