Horrible News

I just found out that a friend of mine died. It was so preventable, it just makes me sick. He had been working underneath his car when the floor jack failed and crushed him. Apparently a neighbor heard him moaning, but thought it was JUST the neighborhood cats. His girlfriend came home later and found him underneath the car. When the paramedics got there he still had a faint pulse, but he didn't make it. He left behind a young son that he was just recently reconnecting with after a difficult divorce.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys this, but PLEASE don't trust your life with a 10 cent seal made in Korea. USE JACK STANDS.

That sucks. Does anyone go under without some kind of back-up support?

Sorry to hear this Micheal.

And our 911s are a bit lower than most cars so if the jack fails we have even less chance

You're kidding, right? I always use jack stands and often leave the jack in place - if I'm taking a wheel off, I usually put that under the body as well.

That sucks, my wife bought me some HF jack stands and a jack combination package for $29 for xmas. I took one look at them and returned them. One jackstand even had a chicken ***** weld.

I had a jack stand tip over one time. it still held the car up on its side that i was able to wiggle out (after screaming for 5 mins) was quite scary!

My condolences.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That s horrible. One of my customers that owned a shop in Aliso Viejo was crushed under a car or truck about 10 years ago.

I aways put a couple of 12x12 pieces of wood under a car when I have to climb under it. You can also use 2x4's cut, stacked and nailed so they could support a car in case the jack stands fail.

often people being crushed die after they are removed, something about stagnet blood in the muscles causes one's system to poison itself when circulation returns. sorry for your loss.

Tragic...damned tragic. A double tragedy because it was preventable. Michael, sorry to read this. Hope this helps somebody think about proper procedure.

Thats what bothers me so much. Just so preventable. The thought of my car falling scares me so much I'm like Wayne when crawling underneath one. Not the way I want to go out.

Thank you all for the kind words.

I never go under a jacked up car, unless it's at the very least supported by 2 Jackstands at one end, where i'm under... Then i also have a set of Design 90 9 inch wheels, with tires on, that go under the car as well AND i leave the jack in place... I'm really paranoid about going under a car...

Sorry to hear about your friend

Tragic story, sorry to hear. At a local car workshop place where military members can rent stalls/lifts for pretty cheap, they are adamant about making sure you use jack stands. There's an old guy that does pretty much nothing but walk around and make sure you're using them. Makes me glad he does.

Sorry about the loss of your friend, Michael, and my condolences to his family on their loss. And thank you for the reminder that safety is not blindly trusting your jack or jack stands.
