The Economy, In Charts
Just to be scientifically dismal, I thought we'd have a thread for economic charts and graphs.
Feel free to post either with or without comment. Some charts are self-explanatory. Here's one to start off - US Leading Economic Indicators ![]()

The biggest climb started at the end of the COLD WAR>..
The freeing of capital from military expenditure and the PSYCHOLOGICAL freeing of people from the thought of mass destruction caused an optimism and expansion of the economy...in all actuality being free form the threat of mass destruciton allowed the value of previousily depressed assets to go to fair market value... Also once must realize that startin in 1984 was the begining of real detente with the USSR.

Nostaus to back up your chart, one should also post a chart of the time line of when the banks excessive MARKET capitalization began....
My thinking would be it started in the late Clinton years but really took off post 911. If one recalls Bank stocks were not doing well in the early to mid 90's...I made some money on buying B of A prefereds as they were depresssed at the time...

Depends on your time horizon and how contrarian you are . . .
The trough of the LEI is usually very good time to buy.

John, have we hit the trough, or are we still sliding down towards it?

With almost every economic indicator having crashed to lowest levels since 1981, 1974, or 1940s; >$400BN of fiscal stimulus coming in 2009-10; a huge effort to get banks lending again; and similar huge efforts coming in almost every major country; seems like we could be getting close. I'm personally betting LEI trough is sometime in 1H09 and as such am slowly moving from defensive to offensive. Slowly, since I'm sure we'll get thrown some more nasty curves along the way.
