The sale, on December 11 at Hammersmith, West London, will be conducted by auctioneers Holts, of Norfolk.

Here is the catalog.

Somehow I doubt it's because he needs the money. I don't know anything about those guns, but they are certainly beautiful.

I used to like Clapton (I still do). Unfortunately, everytime I hear his songs/music, it reminds me of his child falling from the building.

Really, really sad. I just heard about it, and after many many years, it still makes me sad.

I know all of those markers. I worked on jobs for all of them and knew/know many on a personal level. I have worked for Holland & Holland and Rigby as a fulltime employee (as compared to a contractor).

Yes, I do. This level of "scratching" adds anywhere from 20% to 75% to the costs of the guns. Many top engravers have several years backlog that will add to the delivery time of the firearm.

Most people cannot tell good engraving from mediocre. When animals are included it is easy. You should be able to tell sex and specie exactly. By that I mean that it not only looks like a duck, you can tell it is a Lessor Scaup female duck. Of course some animals have no distinguishing coloration or pattern between the sexes. Woodcock all look the same until you peek under the feathers!

The very best engravers can easily reproduce the individual personality of the subject in metal. That means you will be able to recognize your Black Lab from any other Black Lab.

BTW, these guns are built and used in the field by most of their owners. They are custom fitted and balanced for that individual.

Eric Clapton Sells His Gun Collection
December 14th, 2008 10:00am EST

Eric Clapton British rock legend Eric Clapton has earned $659,000 from an auction of 13 of his prized shotguns.

All of the weapons were engraved with the Cream veteran's initials EPC - and one pair came with a set of ornate pictures showing Clapton strumming a guitar under a tree.

A spokesman for Holt's auctioneers in Norfolk, England, says, "He sold because he has developed a preference for a particular type of gun."
