The Ntn'l athem..... I cringe 95% of the time. Someone played the tune with a trumpet not too long ago, it was the best I'd heard in years.

As for Bruce, it's not my fault he has fame. He's awful, always has been.

I remember that Matt. Yes it was a beautiful rendition. I also remember having to listen to my older brother practicing the trumpet day after day. Coming out of his room lips all red. That was a talented man.

It was terrible, we actually turned the channel. To each their own but I suspect the only ones that enjoyed it were fans transposing better days. Just an awful excuse for entertainment. JMHO

That was Chris Botti playing trumpet a few years back @ the AFC Championship game.

As far as "Bruuuuuuthe" is concerned, I'd rather heard the Miller Beer guy say "High Life" 738 times in a row than Springsteen.

Listen to last year's Magic album, especially Gypsy Biker and Devil's Arcade. Awesome songs about relevant topics.

He's 58 years old, tours constantly, plays 3 hour shows, has written hundreds of songs, and is a genuinely wonderful human being.

As for being old . . .sorry guys, but that's a condition that's going around.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the show was pretty bad. It wasn't so much the music or vocals as it was the hype. BS was running around like an idiot. Sure, I know what his regular shows are like, I've been there, but his "slide" and other hi jinks were way over the top.

What's interesting is that there was a "Classic, Videos" on VH1 about BS during the second half. Comparing the films to the show made me embarrassed for ol' pudgy Bruce.

In the end, I think he was celebrating himself.

Slakjaw, the best part of the HT show was the woman in red shakin them for the camera. I think she was on for almost 30 seconds total. Is that about 3 mil?

Then MTV happened. That "Dancing in the Dark" video directed by Brian DePalma. And all of a sudden, millions of women finally "got" Springsteen and made their boyfriends and husbands get tickets when he toured... and it all went superstar from there.

For most fans who have been with him since the early days, that Born in the USA album is their least favorite. It's got some good songs on it, but it represents the newbie fan... the latecomer who didn't feel the blue-eyed soul thing from the beginning... think Motown meets Young Rascals meets Elvis meets Dylan.

It's all there... if the music and lyrics resonates with you, you get it totally... if it doesn't, well, no big deal, but make sure you've sat down with one or more of the early albums and listened on headphones and read the lyrics before you say he's nothing great.

I don't dig his politics at all, and will probably never ante up the big bucks to go see him live again because he's gotten so big... last two times I saw him it was in Charlotte in the old Hornets arena. Just nothing close to the old days, and now when he launches into a song or a harp solo, the newbie fans scream bloody murder for 5 to 10 seconds and cover up the magic.

Also, if you know anyone who is a big fan, ask them if they have a copy of the 35th anniversary BTR set that includes the DVD of the 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert. Ask 'em if you can borrow it or watch it with them.

It's pure magic.
Rumor was that he'd still do an unannounced show at the Stone Pony from time to time.

Being from Jersey, you can't escape the guy. His music is played every 4th of July, non-stop and most other times of the year too. So it's easy to get sick of the guy really fast.

His politics have gotten much more vocal and left in recent years (or am I paying more attention?) and that turns some folks off too.

Not unlike Dylan, he's a poet with a lousy voice that can play the guitar.

Thats the one! I wish I had TiVO so I could have recorded just that 30 seconds.

Me neither. Never could figure out why people listen to him. I actually prefer a few of Bruce's songs - only when done as remakes by someone else.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's version of Born to Run kills Bruce's.

And why the hell does anyone need two keyboardists, especially when their music is so simple? The most impressive thing to me about the halftime show was how quickly they can build that stage and then tear it back down. That is amazing.
oh hell come on. i ant no springsteen fan but the guy can rip on guitar. take a look at the Roy Orbison dvd where bruce plays in the backup band. he is no carl perkins but the guy can play his butt off and he often does

not sure why im sticking up for him but i feel i need to

Shirley, you can't be serious. I think you forgot the green font.

If Bruce is a shredder, it's the world's best kept secret. I wonder why you can never even hear his Tele in the mix. Sorry, he ain't a serious guitar player. I bet his wife can play better and I can't hear her in the mix either. I can understand why folks like some of his tunes a lot more than I can understand how anyone thinks of Bruce as a guitar player. He's about as serious a player as Elvis was.

Ive been playing guitar for almost 25 years. I know who the guitar heros of the world are....Bruce is NOT one of them. He is not my hero and he is never featured in the press/magazines as a guitar hero and I dont know anyone that even considers him an inspiration as a guitar hero...anymore than they do Woody Guthrie (who I happen to believe is in fact a guitar shredder)

But to say he is not a "serious guitar player" is nuts. I have seen him play his balls off on that tele on more than one occasion. From what I gather, he just doesnt bother to show off in that way these days.

Same goes for Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Both are excellent players who let their lead player in the band shine (and get the credit)... on the rare occasion that Petty, Dylan or Springsteen feel inclined to step up and take over lead for a tune or two, I listen and appreciate their talent

As for being buried in the mix, I could very clearly here Bruce's playing last night...there was nothing buried about it. Unlike the general public, most of whom do not play a stringed instrument, I actually pay very close attention to rythm guitar players in bands because I like to see what they are doing.

As far as Springsteen is concerned though, my admiration for him stops after the Nebraska LP. & I did really enjoy that recent DVD concert in Ireland he did.

So who else could the NFL hire for half time? I cant think of anyone. The bands that I love that play live, would never fly on such a mainstream production....

If I had my way, I would resurrect Joe Strummer and have the clash bang out Mag7 or London Calling but anyway.....

It's not about shredding... it's about the feel of the song. Try this out... what's the song saying... do you think his playing fits the feel of the song?

Well It's Saturday night
you're all dressed up in blue
I been watching you awhile
maybe you been watching me too
So somebody ran out
left somebody's heart in a mess
Well if you're looking for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

Some girls they want a handsome Dan
or some good-lookin' Joe on their arm
Some girls like a sweet-talkin' Romeo
Well 'round here baby
I learned you get what you can get
So if you're rough enough for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

The road is dark
and it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'll walk it for you any time
Maybe your other boyfriends
couldn't pass the test
Well if you're rough and ready for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

Well it ain't no secret
I've been around a time or two
Well I don't know baby maybe you've been around too
Well there's another dance
all you gotta do is say yes
And if you're rough and ready for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest
If you're rough enough for love
baby I'm tougher than the rest

That's a good question! I have a hard time seeing Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson fans running in the same circles as Bruce fans and serious football fans. I don't know how they come up with these acts, but I've never seen one I liked other than the Stones, who aren't even an American band.
