Awwwwww....I'm sure the BMW fans are REALLY broken up about this.

Wow, what a bummer. I mean I really liked his previous 5-series, not to mention the pre-facelift 7-series.
Sad day.

I never cared much for BMW anyway and the work of Chris did not improve that feeling. However I am pretty certain that he has been good for the company.

Who exactly just 'quits' a job like that? It didn't say he was hired somewhere else?

Having owned 2 BMW's, an X5 4.6is and currently a 2003 540i, I can't say I truely dislike anything he has done. I was considering a Bangle styled 545 and I think the later model M5's are stunning. The article does reveal some nuances that many of us don't consider when designing cars these days, drag coefficients, impact bumper placements, and hundreds of other factors. If you think of it, what cars coming out lately do you really like? I do see his influences in Acura, Lexus, Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda cars.

It's those influences that have made me like the styling of fewer and fewer new cars. As far as which cars I like, the various Porsches, Mini Cooper/MCS (not Clubman), Corvette (somewhat)...hmmm...I'm drawing a blank now.

i think he destroyed one of the finest designs ever. Made BMW look like Honda. A disgrace, considering what BMW once looked like

I think you laying far to much blame on him changing the whole auto industry. Like I said before, there was alot of factors making the car look "Bangled" that was most likely going to happen anyway. How much, I guess we will see in the "UnBangled" years to follow.

Did he make BMW look like Honda or Honda look like BMW?

Thank Heaven.
I lately thought that Bangle was trying to move the entire lineup in the direction of the 2000CS, of which the front end was described as a "minor disaster." ![]() Or the 2000. Didn't anyone realize that ROUND headlights look more like human eyes, making the styling more acceptable? ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll say it again. . . Bring back. . . Paul Bracq! At least the factory had the courage in the old days to fix their mistakes. Ahhh, that's better. ![]()

BMW doesn't do too much for me either. They're nice and all but in recent years they've been 80% hype and 20% substance. The design is "eeh". Not terrible, not great. For the coin they cost, I'd expect a bit more. I also think they've gotten WAY too electronics-oriented. A guy I used to work with bought a new 325i. Sucker had something like 75 fuses in the fuse block - no spares. There was more wiring and sensors and crap under the hood than hoses. Sorry, but that's a time-bomb, IMHO. I wouldn't touch one without a warranty. Ever.
It'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

I think Bangle is the reason that Audi's are selling so well. When we looked at a car for my wife we just couldn't swallow the look of the Bangled (Bungled) BMWs.
The Z4 is Pontiac Aztek ugly. Not one line on the car flows. The first Bangle Bmer looked like it had Down Syndrome. The interiors were as bad. I hope they can undo the last few years and restore BMW to what it was. The 90s 7 series was so elegant and classy. I was glad to hear of his leaving.

certainly honda has taken more from bmw than the other way around...
however, the departure from the classic look to what it has become, is in my opinion, totally inspired by the modern uninspiring design of japanese vehicles hmmmm...where did this ugly crap come from?...there was a time when even Land Cruiser made exteremely nice looking vehicles...i dunno...im just grumpy

I actually think the interiors are worse. The CRAFTMANSHIP of them is quite good. The DESIGN is terrible.

I don't like the current styling fads. But to the above list of good-looking cars, I must add Aston Martin. I've been watching prices of the V8 Vantage fall. I may own one sometime. |

During a time period where most companies were resurrecting the past in retro designs (i.e. lazy) BMW was moving forward. I'd happily drive an E60 or E90. His designs were DIFFERENT, which you can't say much anymore. Most of the criticisms here would apply to about any new car.
I doubt if he cared about our opinion anyway. His cars sold VERY well, I don't think he has to explain himself to anyone.
