Avocados Are . . .
I love them, just bisected, lightly salted and scooped out with a spoon. I would eat four a day if I could, but restrain myself to one every couple of days or so. I guess they have a lot of fat. But wait, its "good fat". No, fat is fat. I'm confused!

I grew up eating those and loved them. There were dozens of avocodo trees where I grew up and you picked them on your way home from school for a snack and nobody cared. I don't know what the kids do today, stop at the 7-eleven for a bag of candy I guess. I still have dreams of having a yard big enough for my own avocado trees. I was almost talked into buying an avocado ranch in Santa Barbara several years ago and some times wonder if I made a mistake in not doing so. Since I made that decision the prices have gone through the roof.

I used to sell Avacados on the street corner as a kid...we had 14 trees so my inventory was secure. I made so much money at it that Mother and Daddy got in on the act...
Just loved my own product...high on your supply.

We had two huge mature avocado trees for the first 10 years we lived here. They would produce all year long and we would give bags of them away. Eventually, fruit rats moved in, so we sadly bid farewell to the trees. That was 15 years ago and it still pains me to have to buy avocados today when I remember having such a surplus for so long.
Avocado are very healthy fruit. Along with their cholesteral benefits, they contain almost twice the potassium of bananas. |

I ate two of the four I bought on the way home this afternoon - smashed with bleu cheese dressing! My family didn't eat them when I was young, but I sure didn't take long to develop a taste for them once I left the nest.

We've got two trees in the back yard. The smaller one only produces about every other year but the larger produces constantly.
Right now the smaller one has more on it than I have ever seen.

I used to grow avocados when I lived in Fallbrook, CA and developed a love for them! Great to put on a BLT, excellent with just about any sandwich or by themselves with some balsamic vinegar.

They are high in calories from the fat content, but very good for you. Unsaturated fats are not the enemy.

+1 I cut one in half, add a shake of tabasco and pepper and eat with a spoon. Great in salads and as mentioned sandwich. I grew up living next to friends with a huge tree. We had free avos all year...man I miss those days. I hate paying $2.99/per at the local grocery.

Avocados are like bananas, they mature on the tree, but ripen off the tree. It's better to plan ahead if can't find some softer ones in the store. They will ripen in a day or two on your counter, preferrably in a brown bag. Last edited by TerryH; 02-03-2009 at 06:57 AM.. |
