if that dog bit hard enough to break skin, unprovoked, after you had it sniff the hand of that person, and you were around, and there where no raised voices or exited behaviour from you or that fedex person...
Then there is something wrong with the mutt...

sorry, but no dog of mine has ever bit anybody, much less somebody when i was around and had been having a friendly conversation with... I can fully understand your insurance agent

The dog needs the attention of a trainer. I have had dogs that don't like uniforms, but they only bark. Are children in danger if they stray to close?

As for an insurance claim, I think I'm paying the first grand here anyway. How big is the bill? I have to agree she was nice enough not to give your address and have them take the dog, but you need to follow up on this danger signal.

I love dogs, but there is too much liability in one that attacks unprovoked.

Sometimes the lesson that animals can never be fully controlled by their owners is a lot tougher.

For sure your Fed Ex lady deserves a very nice Christmas card. It's nice to see there are people like that in this world still.

My dog is a male Chow @82lbs and is very good natured but also protective of the premises.

The E-room bill came to $584 and she aggreed to me paying half. I thought that overall she was very cool about the whole deal but I was more surprised with the insurance co's view ..........both hers and mine.

BTW- Fed-Ex drivers are contract workers, not employees and they responsible for their own truck, insurance, etc, etc

How are you letting her pay the other half of the ER bill?

Why aren't you paying the whole bill? It was your dog that did the biting!

I asked her what were her expectations of me since her insurance declined payment. She replied that " I would like at least some help with the bill" So I said is 50% fair? she said it was very fair and that was it. I cut her a check

Lordy for that much i wouldn't even have called the insurance company to ask.

A dearly departed aunt had a couple Chows. Never saw them as they were deemed unfit for human interaction. Bad mofo's they were. Stories of broken chains, eaten doors, bit owners, etc. etc.

And I'd consider that extremely lucky. What are you going to do to prevent this in the future?

i find dogs are more aggressive when they are chained. i bet it is frustration. pros call it leash aggression.

you dog needs more exercise, and mental stimulation.

glad this issue is going away. you got lucky.

In all honesty, I am a bit shocked that you wouldn't be paying the entire bill out of pocket, gladly. You really ought to pay the whole bill and kiss her a$$ for her being such a good person about all of this.

I don't understand why she should be responsible for half the bill. Seems she saved your dog from Animal Control.

Yeah, kinda what I would have done.

In fact if it were possible at the time I would have driven her to the ER myself.

i dont know the laws where you are but im with Milt. This is a workers' compensaiton claim and therefore, a WC claim must be started (if in NY). Any private insurance carrier that sees hospital records that indicate she was bitten while on-duty will deny payment, as they should

Anyway, this should be her problem not yours. However, in the future, should your dog bite the mailmans ballsack off, your gonna be sued. ive worked on some very nasty dog bite cases. in one case, the mailmans ballsack was actually bitten/torn right off.... because some lazyazz housewife didnt latch the screen door properly

My dog does get plenty of exercise and daily interaction with my family. In the interim during the day when either one of us is home, his fav spot is at the opening of our garage (which is elevated above the street)

He is tethered by a steel cable. He can only venture so far. No question it was my mis-judgement of the situation. However I had not had issues before this with anyone else as l long as I introduced them to him in that manner.

I did thank her for being a good person about this and I asked her what was fair in payment. If she had said the whole deal, then I would have paid it.

My whole issue with this thread is I was really unaware of the stance that ins co's have when dealing with any dog bite, regardless of breed or circumstanses surrounding

Personally, I wouldn't have asked in the first place... I would have reached for my cheque book.

I think her good nature was coming through, and she was probably too nice to say "the whole thing".
