Canīt stand this winter climate anymore!

It feels like I have not seen the sun since October last year. Every day is the same depressing dark, damp, windy and cold thick blanket over our heads. If only we had snow, to lighten it up, but no - only rain, fog and a never ending dusk. The older I get, the more difficult it feels to endure the Scandinavian winter season.

You guys in the sun belt should really count your blessings. Sun and warmth, jeans and t-shirt. Not to mention being able to take out the 911 any day. I have not driven her since beginning of November.

Sadly, lately I only seem to contribute with my own personal misery to you guys. I hope spring comes soon, igniting a bit a positive sparkle into this cold, tired mind and body.

How do the rest of you northern guys cope?

We have had a great winter in NW Ohio. Plenty of snow for a change! It has been great, but unfortunately it supposed to be near 50 degrees for next week. It is going to eff up the great snowcover we have had. I will agree that winter sucks when there is no snow cover, but I absolutely LOVE it when we have snow!

I'm with you, Livi. Our winters are all over the map. This year has been the double whammy - deep cold + lots of snow. Last year was just snow. The year before was no snow. And on & on & I deeply, deeply hate it.

My job takes me to Florida etc frequently, so I do get breaks - as we wife reminds me every time I return. But I also go to the south in the warmer months & that's when our climate is far better. You just have to be wealthy enough to enjoy both. But the chances of that ever happening are dismal for me.

Markus,
Boy do I understand how you must feel. I spent time in Goteborg several years ago in December. I could not stand it for too long. At that time I was introduced to several medical professionals who worked only four months and then moved to Spain for the rest of the year. They said the tax structure (at the time....70's) was so draconian that it didn't pay them to work....and Spain was cheap then under Franco. Of course they were all single so they had not responsibility to anyone else. I hope you can find a way out...

Likely the weather has a lot to do with the stress you were feeling a few days ago...but that's some case load too.

When you ski as much as I do, you get excited everytime it snows and depressed every time it melts a little. I love summer too but if its gonna be winter, give me winter to the fullest!

This winter is cold even here in sunny Spain. Everyday we have temperatures below 0šC (32š F) and colder. It snows every other day and it looks as it will continue this way for a long time.

And Phil the Groundhog has predicter another 6 weeks of winter. Brrrrr!!!

Doesn't all that boiled cod chase those winter doldrums away? Or, I'd have thought six kids would cure your ills.

In a future I am planning on spending the winter months on the Riviera. Seeing as even Paco is freezing I might have to change those plans for Thailand or South Africa. The cod and the kids do lighten things up. Along with tuned up coffee and beer. Plenty of snow would be better, at least if it snowed everywhere but on the roads.

I thought winter was the reason Swedes invented Absolut.

Markus, judging from your recent posts, you need a vacation. Head south even if it's just for a long weekend - you need to see the sun for a few days.

Yup. I few bottles of Absolut and a weekend in the south would be marvelous.

I can appreciate your sentiments. I grew up in Ontario Canada and moved to Massachusetts USA in 1968. I had endured 47 years of miserable winters and all that comes with living with miserable New Englanders and the over-hyped weather forecast that they pump out every 15 minutes on TV and radio here in the Boston area. Totally negative vibe. Then in 2004 I moved to San Diego and didn't really appreciate the climate until my second winter when I came to realize that I didn't have to buy a "winter car" or deal with the "snow panic emergency" every time 1 to 2 inches fell on the ground. I had 3 glorious years in San Diego and moved back to New England so my wife could be with her family as her father was dying and she was homesick. I am making plans to move back to southern California when the time is right. Life is too short to endure the winters in the north. Once you live away from it you'll never be the same again. Just my thoughts. Good luck and remember that there are options in life.

I was visiting Germany in the winter. Every house I went into used wood to heat.

Thermostat??? What is that?

Climate control, sure the climate dictates the interior temperature.

Is all of Europe like that? Is that part of why winter is so bad?

I can really relate to that story, Max. I will endure until the kids are a bit older, then I am southbound.

I think parts of central Europe, like Germany, still have a primitive heating system. England too I believe. In Sweden we have a lot of energy from rivers and nuclear plants. Wood fires is mostly for the ambiance here. Although in my big old house it is still a bit on the chilly side some days.

This afternoon has turned into one of those overcast windy melting snow days, I just put on No Quarter from Houses of the Holy. It seems to go with the miserable weather.

Look on the bright side, if everyday was perfect you'd take the good weather for granted. At least that's how I felt much of the time I lived in Florida.

Do you have any depressing pics of your house?
