More Good RE News

One of the advantages to not having been in an overheated market means that we are fine now:

Home prices fell 12.4% during the fourth quarter of 2008, the largest year-over-year decline since the National Association of Realtors began keeping comprehensive records in 1979.
...
Other winners included Bloomington, Ill., up 9.6%

I need to get my house in saleable condition.

That's my spring project.

The wife and I need more room...for future additions.

It's looking more and more like this is the time to make the move.

Now where am I going to find another house I can afford with a 3-car garage?

A 3-car garage is like a dream! When my wife shows me houses, she has learned not to show me the garage right away, because my whole decision goes right there. If I see a big 2-car, I say "It's perfect!".

Then I see the price, and realize I should rent another 10 years.

Bloomington/Normal has a HUGE car culture. It is not that uncommon to find 2+, 3, and even 4 car garages on otherwise modest houses. Some of the bigger houses in town ($1 million+) even have 6...8...10-car garages or multiple detached garages. Take my house: 1600 sq. ft. w/ a 1200 sq. ft. 3-car garage! The first real warm spring day, I guarantee I will see the Porches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and old muscle cars out en masse.

Garage
The property prices don't seem to have dropped at all here. On the other hand they never went sky high in the first place.

We ended up finding a house with a great garage. I have managed to arrange the cars with my 911 up next to the far right hand wall with the 996 parked alongside that. Then there's enough space to fit my wife's SLK backed in on the left hand side. I told my wife that there's enough space to fit another car at the back if it was parked parallel to the back wall. I reckon there is too, and I still have the 10x10 workshop on the side.

I couldn't be happier!
