Meeting Pelicans on the road.

I am woefully lazy about taking photos when the good moments arise, but I got to hang with several CA Pelicans last week, three of whom I'd not met before. I just returned today from a 2k mile bike trip through CA over the last week.

Last Wednesday I met Denis aka Speeder for lunch in LA. I had met him before, as I always give a shout to the LA guys when I'm in town. Denis took me for a very spirited ride in his 996 along Mulholland and showed me around Larchmont, which I had never ever heard of before. Really enjoyed it. BTW, we ran into Jack Olsen's wife there while standing on the sidewalk. Small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.

That night I ended up in Santa Monica, where Nostatic (with whom I've hung out many times) came to meet me and Porsche-O-Phile made the ride on his bike up from Long Beach to hang with us. Very cool. We had a great meal, lots of bike and gun banter, just an all around good time.

The next morning I rode up to Santa Barbara for some meetings and then over to see Dan Byers, who unnecessarily treated me to a much-appreciated, super Mexican lunch. Then we went for a nice ride in his awesome '71 Targa. Man, I hadn't been in a "real" Porsche in probably two years. What a rush that car was. Dan is a true mensch. I did manage to get a shot of his car and my bike.

I must have left Santa Barbara just before the fires started because we saw no smoke at all and the fires were all over the news when I sat down at the bar in Atascadero with Billyboy about 2.5 hrs. later.

Billyboy is also a great, salt-of-the-Earth kinda guy. How many of you guys have ever hung out with a commercial fisherman? Bill catches and then sells live fish to Asian markets in CA. As my wife and I eat this stuff at least once a week, it was especially cool to meet a guy who goes and gets the fish for us. Great hanging with Bill and I suspect he may flee to AZ soon and join the Pelicans here.

Unfortunately, I passed within close range of many other Pelicans over the next few days, but was with other friends and/or on a tight schedule. I rode up Hwy. 1 through Big Sur to see a friend in Mountain View.

Sunday I rushed to Sacramento for an early Monday meeting, which was cancelled at the last minute. My next meeting stood me up and the next two were ok. Then I hightailed it to Bakersfield for the night and home today. Once to Needles, CA, I got off the hwy. and took back roads all the way home. Just unreal scenery and great riding roads. I was doing between 90-100 for a lot of the way and didn't stop for photos. At one point in Rt. 60 in AZ I was doing 100mph, thinking I was moving pretty fast when four F-16 screamed past me at under 1000 ft. and several times my speed. Sooooo awesome. I had a warm fuzzy feeling until I heard my radar detector chirp a few miles later. But I made it home ticketless, saddle sore and a few friends richer. Come visit in AZ!

What I've been saying. You can curse someone all you want on line, but when you meet them it's very different. I've met a lot of great Pelicans.

Rick, sorry I missed you. I actually had a busy schedule and my bird was ill. Let me (us) know when you come through again and I'll come out and meet you.

I've always enjoyed my Pelican meetings. You SoCal guys though, you have it good. Not many around my part of the country. I either have to sell them a car (Paul - Seahawk) or meet them at a salvage yard (Denis - Speeder).

I was trying to meet a fellow Pelican the other day but he wouldn't have it. I saw a Pelican sticker on his Ducati in my rear view and I'm sure he saw mine on the back of the work van. Anyway when he pulled up along side I moved over to say hi and he wigged out and slammed on his brakes. Then he tried the other side so I moved over so I could hear him but he just took off like I was on fire or something. Weird dude, maybe the sticker was from a previous owner?

Rick,
It was great being able to take a little time away from the office. Getting to meet another Pelican is always good. I am glad you made it home and enjoyed your trip. Thursday night all the way thru the weekend was a little busy with the fire. My house is out side the Santa Barbara area but my office had a front row seat as it were. Several customer and close friends lost their homes. Many projects we are/were invloved with are also now gone.

Hugh,
You are correct. I have yet to meet a Pelican that I could not have a beer with. Lots of great people on this board who are very passionate about a many things.

To any one ever in the Santa Barbara area, my office is right by the beach and I can usually make time given a few days advance notice to have lunch, dinner, beers or whatever. If you ever just need a rest stop and some good coffee we have that also. Open invite.

Ha ha!

I'm headed to China in a month for about a month. And Vegas is kinda cold in the winter. But anytime after end of Jan. is open for me.
