I didn't think Americans were allowed to travel to Cuba? Am I totally wrong here?

We're not, but there are still a couple of ways to do it.

I never did but lots of friends did. They loved it, I was living in Costa Rica and some would go every three months for three days. It was cheap then, they would go to the factories and buy cigars, bring them back and when I flew back to California I would always bring some. They went to Hemmingway's house, the bars he used to hang out in, brought me stuff they bought at his house, little souviners. I wanted to go bad but it would have ment divorce.
I have a card on my desk as I type this from a girl I know that was in Cuba not long ago. She flew, I think, from TJ. She loved it. On the card she is talking about just buying a beer for one peso.

For years Cuba has sponsored fishing tournaments and your allowed to tie your boat at Hemingway marina Cuba. There are stipulations however thats the only way I know if your an American citizen. Better off going to the Dominican Republic and get one of those hotel resorts all inclusive.

Here's a website that talks about ways to go and what the deal is.

http://www.forcuba.com/f_amer.htm

I read a couple others as well and they say the same thing.

Why would anyone help a ruthless dictator remain in power...and thwart the goals of their own country to isolate the dictator...for their own petty desire to vacation (or buy cigars)there?

A few of our faculty just went to Cuba, and I'm getting emails about educators visiting... direct from US.

Not sure on all the legal details about it though...

my best friend in high school was cuban. not exactly clear on how they got here, but the entire family was full of love and treated me great. "mom" taught me alot, and she would have grounded me on a few occasions, when i acted the fool. (she deferred to my mother). knowing them, and growing up with them always left me with a urge to see where they came from. i always heard stories, (about the old cars), and the super friendly people. everyone is literate over there. the USA cant say the same. i just want to check it out. sorry if i pushed anyone's dictator button.

same with the phillipines. my friends grew up there, and they love it. the stories they tell....i just have to see for myself.

just kicking about my imaginary travel money for now. i am in the early stages. +i have some united miles i really need to burn.

Yes, odd isn't it? I think the lease was 99 years, $1.00 per year. The USA sends a cheque to the Cubans every year and they never cash it. I guess they don't need the money.
