Did'nt Wacko Jacko get rid of Bubbles the chimp for this exact same reason?. They become very aggressive in their teenage years as Jacko found out. He never admitted it to it but I bet he was ***** slapped by Bubbles.
And this chimp was 15 years old and weighed a tad over 90kg. Not my idea of a great pet.

Regarding laws...

There are good laws and bad and not all are about you. A law was passed about 10 years ago, prohibiting the sale of elephant skin boots. This law was not passed to piss you off or prevent you from owning elephant skin boots, but to discourage the illegal hunting/killing of elephants, just for the tusks and skin. If there is no demand for the product, the suppliers move on - and they have to an extent. Yes, the poaching of elephants still goes on, but not to the extent as it once was.

How about a bad law (that had good intentions)...

Parakeets, those little birds every kid wants. Australia made it illegal to capture and export the little guys. Why? Because they were almost collected (and exported) to the point of extinction. The law was passed in the 1890's. Fast forward to today... The law still exists and because of that, the gene pool for parakeets is horrible. There was talk in the veterinary world about passing another temporary law, banning the breeding of parakeets, letting the all the captive ones, die off and then re-import and carefully monitor the breeding from now on. Unfortunately, as of today, we still cannot legally import parakeets, so the gene pool gets even worse.

I saw several interviews with animal experts after this happened that basically said it was only a matter of time. No matter how much we domesticate a wild animal, instinct will kick in at some point. Ask Siegfried and Roy how their lion situation worked out.

My ex girlfriends cat was the sweetest most loving cat I've ever been around but every once in a while he'd try and rip your face off. He'd get a crazy look in his eye right before he attacked. Almost cost her an eye a few years ago and he got me good in the nose once, bit right into it hard.

I have a co-worker who tells a story of the time he was challenged by a chimp to tug of war. The chimp would wait for you to get close to his cage and then stick a rope out at you in the hope that you would grab it. Well he's about 300lbs 6'5, if it had not been for the rope breaking he said the little chimp who weighed about 60lbs would have won.

My wife made a great point, why did this lady not have a tranquilizer gun in her home?

To keep an animal like this and not have a way to sedate it seems a little stupid.

Holy sheet. I think you just figured out the REAL story behind Jacko's nose.

Suzy then went after Coats' dog.

"It turned into something crazy: a big old dog-and-monkey fight like nothing I ever saw in my life," Coats' friend, Kenny Rike, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Coats eventually made it inside his house, retrieved a shotgun and shot Suzy to save the lives of his friends and dog, he said.

But several neighbors testified that Suzy was gunned down only after she had been hit with tranquilizer darts and appeared nearly unconscious.

A jury convicted Coats of misdemeanor animal abuse. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail

Haha, great post Jeff.

I am actually grateful for this thread, i had NO idea they were this dangerous. If i ever encounter one i will now know to stay the fck away from it. As a animal lover in general i might have otherwise gone near the 5x stronger than a 200lb man animal and seriously regretted it.

Tragic story, feel bad for the owner, but even worse for her friend!

Reminded me of the Timothy Treadwell story “The guy who lived with Grizzly’s” for > 10 years in Alaska
during the summer time. I just loved watching his series, his video was shocking and taming all at the same
time, hell he even had me believing wild Grizzly Bears were harmless creatures.

Until I read about his funeral, where prior they cut him out of the stomach of a Grizzly Bear around Kodiak
Island and his total remains filled a 5 gal bucket, So did his girlfriends

I didn't feel sorry for Treadwell at all. I did for his GF who didn't want to be there in the first place. But he was insane and did more to endanger bears, by making them more comfortable around people, than any hunter could have done.

...which begs the question: exactly how many "Jims" did Merlin Perkins go through during the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom run?

Jim did all the dirty work, as I recall...

i figure what the world needs is a children's book telling the story of grizzly man from the bear's point of view..

i call it Mr. Fwuffybuns

About a week or so after this incident, there was a documentary on the animal channel about this sort of thing. They described much the same as "willtel" said above. They also said a chimp's fingernails were so much stronger than ours, they could just dig them in and pull strips of meat off of and animal (or human). They also told about one chimp in a village that had apparently developed a taste for human babies. Gave me shivers.

For Treadwell - ever hear the video of that attack? Only part of it has ever been released. When the bear attacked, the camera was running. I don't know if the camera captured images that have been with-held or if it only got audio...

But the audio, even the incomplete portion that was all that has been released, is the most horrifying thing I have ever heard. The bear gets Treadwell, then you hear the struggle. Horrible grunts, growls and screams. The girlfriend tries to fend the bear off Treadwell. You can hear her hitting the bear with something, maybe a big frying pan? A piece of wood? He begs her to leave, to run, to save herself...Then the bear gets her and you hear that too.

The rest of the tape contains the audio from the actual consumption of the two people but that hasn't been released. Even it was released, I could not ever listen to it.

Keep your distance.

I remember reading about that audio and also that they found Treadwell's arm with his watch still on his wrist. He was a complete nutcase who lost it when Woody Harrelson beat him out for the role on Cheers.

I am certain that I would not tolerate any of my neighbors keeping a 200 lb chimp or even a 50 lb chimp in the neighborhood.

My dog goes around 100 lbs and is never loose. She has never bitten anyone but still if people ask me "does she bite?" I tell them "well she's a dog...waht do you think?" Kinda keeps people from trespassing.

You can start on page 1 if you want but the meat of the attack is on 3.

WARNING, the pic on page 3 ain't pretty and the description of the attack is pretty graphic.
