Price tag is 4,500.00 but he dropped to $4,000.00 in his second sentence. I was tempted to buy it today but thought that model was trouble. I guess it was the one after? with the 928ish headlights?

If mechanically solid, go for it. With a car that cosmetically neglected though, how well was it maintained? You don't list miles, but nice S2s are usually $10k or so.

S2 is a great car, much more reliable than the turbo. Just make sure the timing belt has been changed. The 968 (928 headlight car) was even better. The 968 is the ultimate evolution of the 944 series.

968

Onewhippedpuppy, Thanks. I didn't spend that much time looking at the car. I didn't get the miles or hear it run so I don't know much about it. Was there a bad year or years of the 944? I know the 924 was troublesome and I thought the first generation of 944's was pretty good. For some reason I thought near the end of the run there were problems?

The only issue near the end was the price. They just got faster and better towards the end.

The one with the 928 headlights is the 968. Those are great cars too.

I'd buy it for that. Make sure the timing belts have been done recently and preferably the water pump. Check the clutch condition. Other than that, the S2s are great cars. If I had the extra $$$ I'd jump on it myself and have it shipped out here, east coast car or not (944s are galvanized so typically few if any rust issues).

Certainly not a bad deal.

Be careful with the triangle-shaped windows on the driver/passenger door. Easy to impale yourself on getting in/out of the car if you're not careful when the main windows are down (you'll see what I mean).

If you get it and decide you don't want to keep it I'd be interested in checking it out and possibly buying it when I head back that way in a month or two (I'll probably have to sell my 944 here before moving).

The 968 is a great car (too bad it was introduced at a bad economic time and marketed HORRIBLY by Porsche).

The parts for an S2 are about 1/3 what a comparable part for a 968 is though - they can actually get more expensive than 951s. And it's mechanically about 90% the same. Body about 65% the same. A good S2 is probably way more car for the money but a 968 will have better value overall due to scarcity.

For a real hoot, mate up a 951 drivetrain and suspension to that S2 body. Heh heh heh. It's been done. Wow! Fun.

Timing belt and clutch change receipt. IIRC clutch job is a few $K.

Yea probably moving back east. Sick of CA's bullscheisse plus no work out here. Actually I have two interviews coming up. One of them is definitely good enough to entice me to stay if it turns into a job (really good, prestigous outfit on large/capital projects with lots of work, even now). The other one I'm not so sure about - maybe. Most of my other prospects are back on the east coast (family is there, resources, would have a free place to stay, etc.) CA is kind of like a sinking ship right now, much as I hate to say it. Ground zero for the housing bubble = ground zero for the recession.

Gotta' go where the opportunities are. If they're not here anymore, it's time to split.

Thanks again for the advice. I have a feeling it may be sold before I can back to it. But if it is there I will be sure to ask about the issues you all brought up. If it is there and checks out Ill get it.

thanks again for the help.

I went back to look at the car further. Got there at about 12:30. The car sold a half hour earlier for $3500.00. Oh well.

Bummer.

There will be others though. S2 cabs are not impossible to find in good shape.
