Paul Harvey was quite a bit of a car guy, he really liked cars.

Although he didn't spend huge amounts on them. He never had a big car collection because he said "when you have a car collection, you don't end up owning it, it ends up owning you."

He liked American cars, but in 1988 he bought a brand new Ferrari Mondial and Rolls Royce at the same time from Continental in Chicago. He was not generally an flashy spender like that, but he did it at least that one time (that would have been $250K at the time, maybe more).

His son Paul Harvey Jr. is most decidedly not a car guy - I know at one point he bought a Saturn!

Anyways, Paul Harvey certainly is an American icon, one of the most listened to people (if not *the* most listened to) in the history of the world, given his 60 or 70 years of continuously being on the radio (on up to 1400 stations at one time).

That is something that I haven't given any thought to but how many advertisements can you recall from the 80's? I remember when I was at Fort Campbell back in 88/89 and Paul was "selling" Roachproof! Didn't buy any but the ads have stuck in my mind for 20+ years.

I'm wondering if his son will try to carry the torch or will his show ride off into the sunset?

Not only a radio icon, but a good man as well. Back when I worked construction we planned lunch around listening to Paul Harvey. He will be dearly missed.

Great story about Butch O'Hare. I wonder, have his "The Rest of the Story" stories ever been collected in book form? I think they would make an excellent read.

I read a paperback book of his stories back in the early 80s.

Call me a tight-wad......does $195 (new) or $70 used seem kinda high for a book? I know w/out a doubt that the book is loaded with great stories, but at that price, I'll have to pass.
