Porsches For Sale Forum - WHY????

Like many others, I check out the various Porsches for sale on here. One thing that really rubs me wrong is when the seller states “The AC needs a recharge but works like new”! If it was that simple – why not charge it and say that the “AC is awesome”???

Maybe it’s just me but I would appreciate it more if they just said, “it’s a 911, the AC sucks”! This is an enthusiast site we KNOW the AC blows (hot)!

OK end of my mini rant although I’m sure there are things that makes you wonder WHY. Is it just me?????

The AC always just needs a recharge

My first 944 needed about $600 and the current one was $340. Both just needed a recharge

If this is your worst peeve, life is good.

Freon 12 is expensive...

The AC does work like new.... it was awful when new too.

Heh heh. I think the same thing when I see something on Craigslist or ebay that claims just a little whatever will make it good as new. Heck, if it was really that quick and easy, why not spend that 30 minutes to fix the problem, and sell said object for four times what you'll otherwise get for it?

This is so true. I got a good giggle going thru the 20 yrs of service records provided by the PO of my car. Starting with the very first warranty-covered service by the original purchaser of the car back in 1988, the AC complaints began. "AC does not blow cold" "AC does not cool" etc.

There are also many, many receipts (totalling probably $2k range) in there for various "improvements" to the air, none of which has resulted in much of any improvement at all in performance, if my drive from Houston to Tuscaloosa last July was any indication.

Now that my window tint is gone, I have a feeling I'll be in for some hhhhot summer driving - but I'm sure all it needs is a good charge, right???

I just hate watching cars go through the FS forum that, in better times, I would have snatched up in a heartbeat. I have had to pass on two 968's that have come and gone...

I'm going to have to free up some dough and snag one of these cheap beauties one of these days..

a guy at work said the same thing about his truck, so i sold him 3 cans of R12 for $100. he put it in and sure enough, it had to come back out. i think it had a clog, cant remember, but he got a $100 lesson on, "it just needs to be charged".

"A/C needs a recharge" = "the system has a leak somewhere (which is why it isn't charged)"

It bugs me too and usually I consider it a "strike" against the seller's credibility.

The other ones I love are the ones that say "needs some minor TLC" or "should buff right out" or "just needs a minor/little _________". Well, if it's so minor, little, etc. then just DO IT already. I consider such stuff to be utter B.S. unless the seller qualifies it with something like "the paint is fine but has some oxidization. I imagine it would clean up and be shiny again with some buffing/polishing/elbow grease but I haven't tried as I don't have the time. No guarantees, but see photo for illustration of what I mean..."

Usually these are just B.S. ways to say "well I disclosed the fact the car wasn't perfect" so they don't get sued afterwards.

I thought only FIATS left the factory with rust.

Now my 39 year old Lotuses doesn't have a speck of rust on any of the bodies, that because they are made of fiberglass.

The old cars didn't have barrier hose, so they may just need a recharge. I recharge my Targa when I first brought it about 8 years ago and it may need a recharge this summer, if I don't sell it first. Guess I can advertise that the car needs a recharge, will include three can of freon 12 with purchase.

my pet peeve is the guys that spend 20k on a engine rebuild - list all the things in detail right down to the brand of headstuds - then put "estimated HP = 420" spend the damn $75 for a dyno pull - who knows if the AFR are any good?

I'd never used the AC on my first 924S, ever. I didn't even try it when I bought it. I just assumed it probably didn't blow cold at all so screw it, I hate AC anyways.

Last summer, on a whim (a boiling-my-ass-off in 105 degree heat whim) I turned the big ugly know on the console. Fans whirred, enigne loaded up, and low and behold cold air came out. Frigidly cold air. I was ecstatic.

I haven't used it since. It's probably coming out in place of an AC delete kit. Oh well.

At a PCA gathering last summer, I met a guy who had put the AC system from a Chevy truck on his 911.

He claimed he owned the only air-cooled 911 in the known universe with cold AC.

That has kept me from buying a couple of otherwise great looking cars. You've all summed up my feelings on it- who tries to sell a car that only needs $100 worth of work to make it perfect?

A lot of the prices being asked are just STUPID.

obviously they are tired of the car and have lost motivation to work on it. i get that way sometimes.

True, but I mean, for $100 to say the car is at 100%, it seems like a no-brainer to the seller. Like mowing the lawn before an open house or something.
