barking dog... make him stop!

OK how do I stop a neighbors dog from barking ALL the time.. Aside from shooting him, do they make a dog whistle or something that I can use every time he barks to act kinda like a shock collar or something so he will stop? The owners seem to be oblivious to it and several people have complained but they just dont get it. They let him out at @ 6am ish and I kid you not, he will bark for 3+ hours, non stop and he has a deep bark the actually rattles pictures on my bedroom wall, which is directly next to his yard. Many neighbors have walked outside and yelled "shut-up", etc to him and he will growl for awhile, then finally they let him back in the house. The thing is, he's not a mean dog, and when hes barking, he is usually wagging his tail. We have called animal control several times etc, but they just send letters.

HELP!!!

I feel for you brother, I wish I can offer advise, but you need to get the neighbors to rally behind you.

"Special" hot dogs thrown over the fence... j/k.

The only solution is to arrange something with the neighbors. If that doesn't work then hot dogs...

I had the same problem. This is my crazy solution. I started taking their dog for a walk. It tired him out, made him waaaaaaay more sociable with other dogs and other people. He still barks from time to time, but not like before. I love dogs and the earlier post about exercise is spot on. I really like that dog and so do the kids around the neighborhood. Oh, and the neighbor takes the dog for walks now and it is so much better. Turned out that Red is a pretty darn fun mutt.

We have the same issue with some renters who live behind us. We have left an anonymous note and even contacted their landlord. The response to their landlord was incredibly rude and almost belligerent, demanding to know who made the complaint. If I were going to go to their doorstep, I'd have to take half the neighborhood with me in case they tried to physically harm me. Whatever you do, do NOT talk to them when you are angry, that will usually lead to bad results.

If you feel comfortable talking with the neighbor, give it a shot. Consistent reminders that their dog is a nuisance could eventually solve the issue. If not getting your local authorities involved can send the message. If you live in an area with a Home Owners Association, that may be helpful since most have an ordinance against excessive barking.

Bingo. 99% of the time, it's poor owners who "create" poorly behaved dogs. It's just like a kid, you have to mold them!

One of our neighbors brought his dogs over to the neighbors yard over the weekend during one her barking fits. Shut her up right away, brilliant.

The dog is lonely. Dogs are pack animals. Shoot the owner then adopt the dog.

Call whatever law enforcement entity has jurisdiction over your area and ask nicely if there is a noise nuisance ordinance that covers this situation. Many times, if you call and they have to go over there to ask the owners to shut the dog up more than 3 times, they can start levying a fine.

Tell them that you do not want your name to be released to the owners of the dog.

Trust me, I wasn't that way initially, especially at 1 am. Dogs are cool, sometimes the owners just don't know it.

I had the same problem next door, imagine it X3.

The best way to deal with it, hit them in the wallet. Call your local animal control and have them stop by and visit. If the problem persists then call animal control again then the fines start.

My neighbor now has bark collars on her 3 little bundles of joy.

The reason I found out about this is because my brother has a dog that barks all the time, he is now facing $75 fines every time they catch the dog outside banking. He is very diligent about keeping it quiet now.

When searching for a bark collar for my dog, I found there are a lot of bark control devices designed to stop the neighbor's dog from barking. Basically it's a high-pitched squeeler that sounds whenever it hears barking. You put it on your fence, or a nearby tree, or what have you, and when Fido barks, this thing gives back an unpleasant shriek that will usually startle and stop the behavior.

I didn't get one, and I don't know if it works, but the reviews I read seemed promising.

They do not work. Ask me how I know.

Oh man, I feel for ya - I've been there. Had a neighbor with a dog that would bark for hours nonstop in the middle of the night. I had fantasies of setting up on the hill opposite from our street with a rifle and scope. I instead got together with some neighbors and talked to him face to face. It took a while and eventually stopped.
