someone is looking to see if your IP address responds

could be benign

could be a hacker

if your computer responds ot the ping the next thing will be port scan looking for common open ports

when he finds your mail port open he will start a dictionary attack looking to gain mailbox access

once he's done that he'll use your box as a spam box

normal stuff like that

no need to panic

"ping" is not a big deal. Especially if you have a router/firewall.

I've sent hundreds of thousands of pings in the last 10 years. I've pinged stuff that was in my control as well as random stuff on the internet.

Don't worry about it.

Ummm, yes and no. A device always responds to a ping, and it responds to a ping before it does ANYTHING else. An old fashioned way of bringing down a server wass to launch a ping attack where the server stops anyother functions because it's responding to millions of pings. Who would have thought eh.

Right, DoS (denial of service) attack. These days most often they come as DDoS (Distributed DoS). Fortunately, most devices these days can be configured to not respond to pings. I suspect that his security blocked the ping and didn't respond. DoS via ping is less common these days, and based on the message that he said that he got, he's probably not being DoSed.

These days DoS attacks are usually done via TCP packets not ICMP.

I may no longer be in the biz, but don't make me "Ack Syn" you fellow geeks into "no sockets available land". I haven't heard anyone talk dirty like that in a while

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa TCP RST buddy. I'm strictly DTE-DCE, no DTE on DTE action here.

OK Bill, but before I go, I must point out that many devices will service and satisify all TCP before ICMP
