I picked up two lawnmowers yesterday. I can't decide whether to get them running or put them on Craigslist as is. It's fun to resurrect one, but the $/hour ratio isn't that great. If I sell them 'as is' for $25 apiece then the $/hour ration is fantastic.
The TV we used to use in our workout room came out of a dumpster. After using it for a couple of years we sold it for $25 at a garage sale.

A bit off topic but all the same. Got a penny as change last year. Turns out to be a 1909-S VDB. I call a coin collector and tell him. He doesn't believe me, says he has never heard of anyone getting one as 'change'. He thinks I robbed a house or something. So my wife and I go down to his shop. Turns out the guy is a really nice man, late 70's. I help him focus his microscope to take a gander at it. He's says sure enough. He pulls out a whole vile full of 1909-S. Says he never has had a VDB. He gives me $500.00 for it!!

Anyone know the name for that type of adjustable wrench? I've hung on to a similar one for a few years, just thought it was cool old tool.

taking the garbage to the dumpster at work last year, i looked in and and saw a perfect condition NAD amplifier with pre-amplifier. Jumped in, got it and drove straight to the used stereo shop and got $300 for it. there was an old pioneer silver face amp too, which i kept and still use

Looks like smooth jawed version of a pipe wrench which is also referred to as a monkey wrench. The modern version would be a adjustable/crescent wrench. Side note. I'm surprised by how many ads I see in magazines where the mechanic/technician is smiling and proudly holding his adjustable wrench. Adjustable wrenches are usually good for rounding bolts/nuts and busting knuckles and should be the least used tool in his box. I use them more to bend metal more than loosen bolts. Of course, a box/open/socket wrench of the correct size should be used on fasteners. Last edited by TerryH; 04-09-2009 at 04:56 AM.. |

When I lived in a college town, it was a well known fact that the spoiled kids from out of state typically threw out everything that wouldn't fit in their car prior to leaving for the summer. Apparently mommy and daddy paid to refurnish their apartments. It was amazing the stuff that would be stacked around the dumpster in apartment complexes. Best that I found was a nearly new poposan (sp?) chair sitting outside my apartment one day. I used that thing for probably 5 years, absolutely the most comfy chair I've ever had.

In the late 90s my brother and I went dumpster diving at Boston University when they would get rid of computers from the labs. We once brought home five or six complete 486 DX66 machines which were still complete and working fine... they literally unplugged them from the wall and tossed them into the dumpster. My bro turned them into a Linux network in his apartment.

I used to do a hellava lot of dumpster diving in the south St. Louis area. We would hit up office supply store dumpsters - they would always pay out.
The other shocker was a local Blockbuster- they threw away about 200 brand new DVD cases every 2 weeks. I guess when then get new movies in individual cases they put them in their own special cases and throw the new DVD cases away. I had about 1000 DVD cases in my basement for three years. I think I gave a lot away eventually. It seemed like such a waste to throw them out. I put my burned CD's in them. We would also go buy these car audio installer shops... a lot of times when they put in new head units or speakers they would throw the OEM stuff away. We got a lot of free car speakers and stereos like that. Also, burnt out car stereo amps would get thrown out- but those cases are aluminum and I used them from a lot of electronics hobby problems. My friend who sometimes take them and fix them- usually a blown chip or fuse. We worked at an electronics repair shop back then (2004) Now that I live in a university-centered city I need to get back into it. The main thing is- you need a guy with a truck :-).

Spotted the right box among a pile of junk in an open trailer. Looked like it was headed the direction of the dump. At the next traffic light I rolled my window down and....
It's an exact match to the pair on the left which I bought about 22 years ago. Stuck under the bottom drawer of this "new" box was a set of large combination wrenches 20mm and up, yahoo! |

I trash picked exactly one time in my life. One of my neighbors threw out a really nice leather sofa. Me and a friend grabbed it and brought it into the house. Within a week the whole Fkin' place was infested with roaches....seems they got rid of that couch for a reason.
Took me several fumigations to rid my house of the damn filthy little insects. I didn't keep the sofa either. |

I did that once with a broken Speedmaster knock-off. Put it on the front steps. Day one, someone took it and put it on the door handle. Day two, someone put it in the bushes and taped a small note to the door commenting on the "very nice bushes." Day three it was gone.
