I have a question for you Outlook 2007 with business contact manager gurus.
My wife's work requires that they use this application for their work email. She has it on her lap top and it works great. (at her work) When she brings her lap top home she can recieve email but not send any. I know that her ISP at work is not the same as ours here at home which is AT&T. One of her co-workers said that all we needed to do was call AT&T and have them unblock port 25 on our modem and all would be good. Well after two hours on the phone with tech support they said they can't do that....UNLESS we have a business account with a static IP address. We don't have that here at the house. The only options we have were to change the configuration settings in Outlook on her lap top every time she checked her mail either here or at work....OR Install Outlook on the home computer and configure all the settings here through AT&T. I have done that. Whats happening now is that Outlook seems to be down loading all of her past mail since they started using Outlook at her work. We're talking like 800mb of mail for a month! To make a long story short, is there a way to syncronize this computer and her lap top so that whichever machine she checks her mail on is current information? This is all new to me. I have never used Outlook before. Thanks in advance for any help on the subject.

I have outlook where I work and use it from home. I dont use outlook on my pc itself We have a web based version so we can connect from anywhere. I have set it up before the way you have and when it synchronized it duplicated the users machine in their office. I'm not sure why yours would be collecting old mails that have been deleted..unless maybe its connecting to a remote mailbox and it hasnt been accessed before so it still has all the old stuff in it.
I dont know of any way to cancel it from the sync. In the past I've had to let them update completely.. Maybe someone knows some tricks that I dont and can give us both some tips... |

Most of what you are talking about is less Outlook related but more Exchange Server related.
The short answer is you'd be better off with OWA (Outlook Web Access) - you'll have your calendar, contacts and email all sync'd up. No mail server issues, etc. The long answer is you could set up any number of PC's with Outlook connected to the same exchange server account. Your Wife's company IT dept will either help her with the settings (sometimes security is tied to the specific computer) or they won't allow it. There are some more windows/MS savvy guys on the board that hopefully chip in.

She has used the OWA. Its a basic shell compared to the internal server type. Its been kind of fun for me to try and get this to work since I am not really a computer person. I think I know enough to get myself in trouble.

Not sure about Exchange, but isn't there a cached mode in Outlook that allows offline use with autosync?
Mind you if it has Microsoft on the label it means that it is a pain on both ends of the spinal cord to use and set up.... I use off line files and a local copy of Outlook and am very mobile. Works well.. Dennis

It sounds like they are running an Exchange backend. Have your wife ask the IT guys if they support RPC over HTTP. Otherwise, OWA as the others have said.
