How To Sell A Car?!? Pelican? eBay?

I know, Pelican has their list, but what about eBay? Cars.com? How does one sell a car these days? I've had my 1987 911 for eight years, and people still put ads in the paper back then!

Tell me what I need to know - fees, success with an old Porsche for sale, etc.

I just sent an email..told Evren I wanted him to be the car's next caretaker.

Have you tried the classifieds here? Might be a good bet, and it's free. Also, some people still read newspaper ads.

Sounds good. I just decided to sell the car over weekend. I'll have to take some photos if the weather ever clears...

Does $25k sound reasonable for a 36,000 mile car? Buying a 997...

Really, it's all about condition...and the Porsche market is soft now, but the mileage alone should attract interest.

Well, that's good. The car is really in tremendous shape. Spent the last eight years with it, and this website/store!

I'd sure see nothing wrong in advertising it here...and with '87 being the first year for the G-60, I think it is, gearbox, that model year has a following.

Dunno, Probably 8-10 with the economy and all. I might go to 12 with pictures

Folks may not agree but 2 or so years ago I sold a 92 Alfa Spider Veloce (with all the help and work from Slow n Rusty) on EBAY for what I considered to be OK money (damn near what I paid!). Lots of very good pictures with history. Paid for half of the Carrera (I know, I know).

Personally never tried on this forum, but I have helped a couple of folks, and the results have been positive

OK,...12.5 but I need pictures

Didn't mean to demean Pelican. If it weren't for Wayne, his store, this board and you all, I wouldn't have been able to perform nearly so many tasks with the car. I'll take some photos and put it up tomorrow on the for sale side of Pelican, maybe even add a website with my Apple account for more info.

Thanks for the tips, as always!

It sure can't hurt to put it on the "for sale" BBS here and on craigslist. They're both free and allow you to post pictures. All it takes is one buyer and it really doesn't matter how he or she found you. eBay can be good but tends to be a bargain-hunter site unless something is really collectible or otherwise uncommon. Your car, nice as it probably is, is neither.

$25k is about the very top of the 3.2 carrera market so it would have to be basically in new condition to attract that kind of $$. Put it out there and see if you get a bite. Good luck!

FWIW, I sold my SC on the FS board here and had multiple serious lookers.

Sell the Porsche right here on PelicanParts, eBay as a last resort. Craigslist was effective for my father last year! Local Porsche clubs are another good way to sell your car.

Is there a Nationwide option for Craigslist?

crazedlist.org using Firefox will let you search multiple sites. I don't think you can spam every Craigslist site with your ad though.

RKC, exposure is everything. Post it everywhere that you can for free (Pelican, Rennlist (if you're a member), Roadfly, and Craigslist). The only pay site I've tried is Autotrader with good results. There's just so many horror stories about Ebay that I've never bothered with it, and never had to.

Take a bunch of pictures and host them online on a website like photobucket. This allows you to send interested parties a link to a large gallery of photos, instead of you trying to attach them to emails. Take pictures of every door, carpet, exterior angle, etc. Typically when I sell a car I have 60-70 pictures hosted online. Write a COMPREHENSIVE ad detailing the car's condition, faults, maintenance/repairs, etc. Make sure the ad is well written with proper grammar, nothing is a quicker turn-off than a poorly written ad. If you have service records, consider summarizing them in Excel so that a buyer can quickly review them. $25k is top dollar for a Carrera, you need a really great ad to help yourself.

Good luck with the sale. There is a pretty small market for a 25k Carrera, get it out there. Start here, a lot of people visit Pelican. Get every inch of the car photographed and prepare for a lot of tire kickers.

I got full asking price for my bike through Craigslist last night, exactly one week after I posted the ad.

When I sold my car last year, I put ads on Pelican, Autotrader, Craig's List, in the local paper, in the newsletter at work, and on the local PCA website. The guy who bought my car saw it on Autotrader even though he's on Pelican--and that was five months after I put it up for sale.

The first big stock market plummet happened the day before the sale closed. I can imagine things are much worse now.

I built a webpage for the car with loads of pics and maintenance history.

Advertised here - got a few emails.

Also advertised on Craigslist, got my car featured on a thread here in OT (ok not really). Sold the car in a week and a half for full asking price.

You can't take a single prong approach. It's got to be a marketing effort to get the most/best exposure with the least amount of money.

When I sold my 540, I used CL, Bimmerfest, and Autotrader. Ultimately, it was the Autotrader ad that sold it but I got hits from both there and CL.

I'd do the normal Porsche sites but would also do CL and one of the commercial sites like Autotrader or cars.com

Sold my C36 in about one week on CL. I hadn't even gotten around to posting an Autotrader ad. In general though, I find CL to be better for lower priced cars.
