Hate Paying for Cable? Here’s Why.

Interesting article here regarding what we pay for some of the channels included in our cable packages.
What Cable Subscribers Pay for Channels They Don't Watch

Here are the wholesale prices that the cable providers pay:

Wish I could just pay for the channels I watch and not a bundle.

Ditto, would love to build my own bundle. Very little that I watch and would probably pick up more premium if I could pick n chose.

Unfortunately would never work.

The channel with the highest cost for me is CNN. I haven't had ESPN on in like 10 years. I wish I could drop it to be honest.

I think we watch about 5-10 channels fairly regularly, and may top out at about 20 channels.

As far as top down on that list, the most expensive is USA, and then nothing else until down around Lifetime, TCM and A&E.

I don't watch any sports or new channels, I could probably cut my cost by 1/2-2/3 if I could just drop that crap.

I suppose the day is coming when we pay through the nose (more than now) for internet access, and TV becomes an afterthought. I could do without the TV.

I've been using Hulu to watch Caprica and I buy season passes for ice hockey, motogp and F1 online.

Originally, that was the plan with Verizon Fios. Ala Carte programming. It was supposed to be the big selling point. But of course they quickly changed their mind on that one.

How do you watch F1 online? PM me if necessary. I would love to cut satellite out my bills, but don't want to part with F1 and some other minor shows.

I watch about 6-8 channels, none which are local. A la carte would be nice.

I'll never get cable again. I got Direct TV which sucks marginally less, but it's just to keep the wife occupied and outta' my hair. She watches sometimes. I don't. I watched the US/Canada hockey game (Tivo) and before that the Superbowl (Tivo, FF-ed through the commercials which I don't care about) I actually FF-ed through most of the between-plays crap too, just watch the snaps and actual plays. Takes about 25 minutes that way.

TV sucks now. Like I said, I've got plenty better things to do (Pelican included!) than rot away staring at a screen. I spend most days staring at a screen at work, why would I want to do that on my free time too?

cable is essentially a monopoly - pretty much tells you what you need to know...

I usually drop it every spring and resume in the winter (after some bargaining over the phone for lower rates). But with digital I can get the PBS channel pretty well, so I'd miss Discovery and History channels - not much. I skipped cable all this winter (free DVDs from the library + the 2 channels from PBS) and do not plan to renew.

I DID buy some Comcast stock tho...

$40/mo. x 12mo. x 25 years= $12,000 saved.

Random commercials every 5 minutes did that idea in.
