Seriously? I've always discounted boxsters as I'm 6'8". Was there any information on what seating option he used? On of the things that would be nice over the 964 would be the Tilt/ telescopic wheels.

Modern Porsches have telescopic, (but not tilt), steering columns.

I'm considering a 1998ish Boxster to replace my 944 that met an untimely death to a driver who didn't understand what that big octogon with 'STOP' printed inside meant. Problem is everyone thinks theirs is worth 15k+ while KBB says 8.

You thought about a 928S4 maybe?

Same price range, and 170+ mph performance.

Boxsters are cool, but no boxster on earth sounds like this:

Was it about this? (not my thread)

Boxster Engine Failures

Anyone heard about this?

Apparently it usually happens to 2001-2004 models with under 50K miles. What happens is the intermediate shaft in the engine fails and when it does it does catastrophic internal damage, where replacing the engine is really the only viable repair.

It was news to me. I was strongly considering an '03 Boxster when I bought my '03 MINI, had the Porsche not been sold out from under me I would have it now, and might be in this mess. The car I was considering was an '03 automatic with 25K on it, right in the heart of the range experiencing the biggest share of this problem. What brought it to my attention today was a friend who was also seriously considering buying one and started reading Boxster forums..........now he's not so sure he wants to go that way, nor do I blame him. Who would want to have to buy a $15K engine for your car months and a few thousand miles after you buy it?

They also claim a large incidence of timing chain failures, where pieces of the chain break off and either lodge in the works causing the valves and pistons to become intimitely acquainted, or to get sucked up by the oil scavenge pump, locking it up, stopping one of the cams and doing the same........

Current theory on the IMS is that either the nut that holds the gear on the end fails, allowing the gear to work loose and jam things up, the rear bearing fails, sending metal thru out the engine causing complete failure or the intermediate shaft (which is hollow) gets partially filled with oil and at certain rpms causes a harmonic which causes the bearing to fail and so on........

Fascinating stuff.

Porsche is not helping out of warranty owners (all 2001 - 2004 owners since the Porsche warranty is 3/36) at all, simply refusing to get involved. A lot of owners are replacing their Boxster engine with one from a 911, which is not only larger displacement and more horsepower, but also seems to not suffer from this problem.

I was in Paris 10 years ago on vacation, the Boxster was huge compared to most cars over there.

Actually that's my next pick. I'm going like crazy on crazedlist.

I found a 928S in pretty good condition that would leave me a chunk of cash leftover. I'm going to look at it this weekend, assuming the insurance company gets me a rental by then.

Although the changes are relatively subtle, there is an enormous difference in looks between the early series Boxsters and the latest series. Absolutely no comparison. I could never get interested in the early series purely from an aesthetic viewpoint. Especially those 996 lights and interiors!

The new series are very much more attractive in my view. Much closer to the original show car.

Nice cars. But a crack habit would be cheaper.

From the 928 ad: I have 32+ pages of receipts

That's not a good sign.

Very true, we had a 86s back in the late 80s, A/C and brakes, over $5K It was a 5 speed with no sun roof.

Send me a PM, there are a lot of 928 model subtleties that you should be aware of.
