Network guys? Linksys router problem

I have a Linksys WTR54G v2 wireless router that I'm having an issue with lately. I have the newest firmware for quite a while now. This problem recently started. People on the Linksys forum cannot help fix.
At random, the router will switch over to Local Access Only mode, and not allow access to teh intarwebz. It does this spontaneously.
I've spoke to Linksys tech, and they had he change some settings, but it didn't help. It's happened several times since then.

Connected by cable to the router in an Xbox 360, PS3, and a laptop via wireless.

The router is secured with a network name and password. WPA Personal, Network Mode is Mixed, and SSID Broadcast is enabled. Firewall is enabled as well.

Any ideas on how to stop this from happening? It's getting rather bothersome.

I'm currently connected to the router twice, oddly, via wireless. Name and Name2 both appear.....

The power supplies go crazy in the two dead Linksys routers I have. Does it make any noise?

Linksys routers are terrible. I have thrown away three that went kaput. Get a Netgear.

I've been running a D-Link 624 for 6 years with nary a problem. I would not hesitate to get another.

Time for a new one. I had one die a couple of years ago. It wouldn't keep its config.

Nothing compares to a Linksys, when they are working. But Netgear is horrible.

I found mine acting strange after about three + years (DNCP stopped working and had to assign IP addresses was the big thing). Tried all kinds of things including firmware.


Went out and got a new one and all things normal again. Seems that after a few years, they just start acting strange. Life expectency on enterprise class equipment is around 3 - 4 years. It would make sense that since you keep the router on 24 x 7, that a consumer device wouldn't live forever. If it's more than a couple years old, time to replace.

Over a year ago, my relatively new Linksys Wireless-G was locking up and I was having to reset it a couple times a month. I finally called tech support and had a chat. I have not had the issue since, so evidently it worked for me. Not sure if this will help anyone here, but probably can't hurt. Upgrading firmware is always good too, but I only did the menu corrections.

My Linksys died one month past the 1 year warranty time. They refused to talk with me about it.

Bought a Netgear and its worked fine the last 3 years. Last Linksys product that I will ever buy.

Most of the WRG's have a common flaw, no heat sink on the processor inside. They overheat after a period of use and start doing funny thins. People have come up with some creative solutions to the issue:

Basically if you want hassle free wireless the only way is an actual Cisco Aeronet, but its going to cost a bit more.

When I used Linksys, the AP/routers would only last a year or so before becoming hopelessly flakey. I then used a Netgear for a year, and finally switched to Airport which have been troublefree. My original Airport (11b) is at least 4 years old and going strong as an extender to the newer Airport (11n) which is about 2 years old. I personally would tend to avoid Linksys in future.

I agree with the above posts, consider Linksys stuff to be disposable . When things go flakey, just get a new one.
