Juan,

With a computer that has been running the same OS for 18 months now its way past time to think about formatting the hard drive and starting over again.

Second, if you really have 44 kb free space out of a 72 gig hard drive, that is your next problem and will almost certainly be fixed by formatting the drive and starting over. You need A LOT more free space for the system to work correctly. Windoz operating systems tend to pile on data as they do things and install programs, and this is one of the main reasons to start over again every so often.

Third, how much room you have on an external drive is a moot point if your main hard drive is completely packed full of data. Its good to have a lot of room there, but only because you very well may be ready to fill it up with data before re-doing the main hard drive.

Juan the viruses will prevent the known antiviruses from opening or being downloadable.

Search for my thread on this topic "Ruh roh, just got a puter virus", all of this is covered in there in pretty good detail.

That's exactly what is happening. I have about 4-5 CDs for this and none of them will work, I will search for that thread and will report back, Thanks !

Juan, if you decide not to reformat, you will need to free up space on the C drive first.

Copy any pix that you may have from the C dive to the external. Navigate to C:\windows\system32\temp (type %TEMP% into the start menu search box) and delete anything in there. Bypass the recycle bin, by holding down the shift key and then hitting the delete button.

Clear out IE's cache as well.

One more thing. If you really do only have 44 Kb free, it's no wonder nothing is working.

Juan,

The big things that hog disk space are pictures, videos and so on. Move them off of the hard drive then do what Dave said.

Under the Start Search -> type "%temp%" without the quotes or C:\windows\temp

Typing in %temp% should take you to a temp directory under your username. Using the C:\windows... Takes you to another temporary directory that has a bunch of junk as well.

Try moving pix - and any movies/music (as Joe mentioned) first. Those take up plenty of space and should be easier to find...

EDIT: I made a mistake for the path to the temp directory under C:\windows....
It should be C:\windows\temp

I missed this earlier.

Were you able to free up any space?

What error do you get?

PC Tools is famed for its Spyware Doctor line of signature-based anti-malware protection, but whether you use Spyware Doctor or some other brand they hope you'll supplement it with PC Tools' own behavior-based ThreatFire 4.5. ThreatFire is designed to work alongside a standard signature-based product to catch zero-day threats that are so new they don't yet have signatures. And it's free--what more could you ask? Well, you might ask for a tool that leaves a little less of the decision making to the user, but, still, this is a very good addition to any personal security toolkit.

This works really well with symantec and Windows Defender...which is what I use....
this is a company PC so I have to use Symantec, and I do agree with what others have said
it is cumbersome but it works. The Threatfire is a good add on for that little bit of extra
protection along with Windows Defender.

You load a lot of machines up with all those antiviruses and they might as well be viruses themselves. AVG is a total resource hog.

Malware bytes works for me against any and all comers.

Thanks , so far

AVG - comes with an error at the end

Malwarebtyes( which I had previously installed) is dead now and it wont event open, if I try to download it again it will send me to a blank page

Registry Clean Expert- Purchase that one and it did some but theres 14 that wont remove, I figured this software will resolve the issue but did not, so I may have to ask for a refund.

Mechanic System Tool- did nothing

I try 4 or 5 more programs and all of them are telling me that I have problems but when is time to fix them they re-direct me to the site to purchase the program.

Im sure we will get to this soon or later but at the moment looks like later

rename malware bytes to something like 'blah'

The virus is preventing it from opening, because it knows the name of the program. Go into the malware bytes folder, change the name of the .exe file to blah.exe and it should open.

Did you try System Restore to an earlier day when you did not have any problem?

Juan, what about disk space? If you still are full, nothing will happen.
