Wear your helmets

Got a call this morning that Tim, Kellys husband is in critical ICU.

Tim is in his late 30's, 2 kids under 10.

Dropped his bike last night around midnight.

Wife was supposed to go out tonight with Kelly and the rest of the girls on the block to celebrate Christies B-day.

Instead they are all at the hospital consoling Kelly.

Does not look good.

Sorry to hear it... I hope he has a full recovery.

And it's not just helmets... FULL gear, every time, is my rule. (Even though it's been a few years).

I just shake my head when I see morons on superbikes wearing nothing but t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops.

The family business of a friend of mine in high school was making artificial limbs.

80% or more of their business was from young women who were injured from riding on the back of motorcycles without proper riding gear, and their boyfriend dumping the bike.

As a firefighter/medic the traffics we go on with bikes especially super bikes always end bad for the rider when he is unprotected, I always wear the full gear when riding....ALWAYS!! I hope he has a full recovery!

HOLY MACKEREL! This is just the kind of thing you just don't think of.

Crossing my fingers for a full recovery. Damn, that is harsh.

Wow; this always hits home with me. As an avid rider my entire life, I've lost too may friends to these things, and know too many folks who have lost friends. I really feel for you and his family; "been there, done that...". Here's to Tim's full recovery.

Hope y'all wear boots above your ankles, Shaun, hope that left less of a mark on you than your bike

My brother hit a van that pulled out in front of him, split a nice shiney new helmet, and his pelvis, shoulder etc. Spent a month in ICU; I swear they were trying to kill my him, and would have proven successful save for the efforts of my wife, mother and sister.

I am convinced that you have a much better chance of successful in recovering from any serious trip to the hospital if you have family there to diminish the likelihood of "mistakes". Does not hurt one bit if they are an anesthesiologist or nurse with CCU, ICU and emergency experience.

These names are not ringing a bell.

I always wear boots, gloves, helmet. I need a warm weather jacket though.

This was entirely my fault as an inexperienced rider, and I'm sure driving 6 hours starting at midnight Friday night, all day in the sun at Hershey, PA, driving back last night and getting up a 7 this morning probably didn't help.

Just going out to get gas in the neighborhood. I'm 5 cars back as we go through an intersection, few hundred feet up, the the second car pulls over and stops (one lane road). the lead car is taking a left. no oncoming traffic at all, she's taking a left for 20 seconds. We're all sitting there behind the second car watching the lead car sit slightly pulled left, signal on, for a full 20 seconds. Lots of beeping.

Very open road, you can plainly see no oncoming traffic. I FOOLISHLY decide to run up the left side of the cars, very cautiously at 5MPH or so, the woman taking a left finally starts to take the left. I plan on driving through where she is, when she stops. Simultaneously, the second car that was stopped, starts to drive into me.

Panic brake, bike goes down, short slide. the lady turning keeps yelling, "I had my blinker on." over and over. I pick the bike up, start it and go get gas. Come back home, most of the skin on my knee is gone, hip is banged up, forearm a little as well. very sore now. Will be more tomorrow. Helmet has a serious scuff on the right side. Without it, I'd be in the hospital.

All in all, this was a very inexpensive lesson learned and glad I could at low speed with minimal damage to me and the bike.

I see some carbon fiber in near future to repair the crack.

Ahh road rash... BTDT.... thankfully it was 25 years ago... went down at 55 mph wearing swim trunks, Van's tennis shoes, a watch and sunglasses.... elbows, palms of hands, shoulders, knees and hip.... lived on sheets on my belly on my parent's family room floor for a couple weeks. The cracking of the scabs/skin when you moveas it heals is almost as bad as the initial burning pain.

Glad you did not damager yourself too badly, not to sound like a Dad or anything, but you have to stay focused; take care of yourself and stay sharp if you are going motoring on a suicycle.

I wish I had a digital camera when I was a resident; did you know that pavement will sand off bone just like it does skin?

Update:

Swelling in Tims head stopped and they removed the shunt.

They backed off the meds and he is semi conscious.

Aware of visitors.

Is able to communicate a bit, indicated to his wife that "he f'd up and knows he's in the doghouse"

Appears he is stable enough that they are planning on how to deal with the rest of his injuries.

Looks promising but he still has a long road.

Great to hear! Driving through CT, I'm amazed at the vast majority of people, from Harley's to sport bikes with no helmets. For national stats purposes, death by motorcycle with no helmet should be listed as "suicide."
