Let's start with road bikes -- at the low end price range, how much does a modern road bike weigh (complete)?*

Then how about a super expensive (touring, or sport touring) road bike? What is the cost and wt. there?

This is really a question of who is riding the bike and how they are riding it. There are plenty of sub-10 lb bikes out there, but I for example am surely too heavy for them. Then there's the question of racing... the UCI has a 6.8 kg minimum weight limit.
I prefer a compromise of strength and low weight.

Cgarr - it depends -- I don't ride as much as I used to when younger (and not living up a hill). In summer it could be every 2 dyas on average.

The other 6 months of the year (winter) - it is 0 -- I've seen enuff weather as a field biologist to last me a few lifetimes, so I am a fair weather rider.

Most begin between 18 to 20 lbs.

A lot depends on what components you use, particularly the wheels.

Another point: in many cases, the difference in weight between a low-end bike and a high-end bike of 16lbs or less, usually equates to a full water bottle.

But it's almost never all about the weight.

This is a 1984 Univega. If yours is similar, why not refurb it, ride it, smile and be happy?

I agree with Dari. Any old frame is going to have the soul the newer ones progressively lack with each new lightweight high strength tubing itertion, which 9 out of 10 cyclists don't even need.

Troll around Craigslist with the heading Campy Record, and see what you can get. Just make sure that anything you do find is compatible with your 25-year-old frame.

Low-end bikes vs. high-end bikes is like comparing an Impala to a Lotus Elise.

Maybe the OP's question was a joke.

Whatever - the price tag between an $800 Trek and $8,000 Trek, should say enough.

The two or three pounds difference is the absolute last thing to consider in this regard.

I'm getting back into cycling after more years than I am willing to divulge. Having gotten lots of good info and advice from guys here, I bought a Surly Long Haul Trucker touring bike. As shown, it weighs probably 35 lbs and I've got $1350 in it.



Being bitten, I just bought a 1983 12 spd, Medici Pro Strada, full Campy Super Record which weighs 23 1/2 lbs as shown. With new butted spoke wheels on Campy hubs, I've got $1600 in it.



They're both steel.
