Inexpensive Lesson Learned
Don't put yourself in a situation with erratic drivers and unknown options for safely navigating around them. Knee and hip are at 80%, consider myself very lucky.

Wow, so they fixed your bike?
I remember seeing this picture a while back (last week?). What happened. You can't post this sort of thing without a story/description.

Steve, I did the work myself. There's a big kluge of a carbon fiber patch where the fairing cracked. Unfortunately, the cracked allowed the fg to sproing apart in 3D, so it was very hard to get it back to shape. This was a quick, temporary repair: fix the crack, tape the decals, Duplicolor Flash Red rattlecan, 1500 followed by some 3M cutting paste (wish I had gotten my polisher out of storage!). 1 hour's time and it looks fair. I'm going to go through it this winter when the whole bike gets repainted.
here's the story I posted on Scott's "Wear your helmet" thread" This was entirely my fault as an inexperienced rider, and I'm sure driving 6 hours starting at midnight Friday night, all day in the sun at Hershey, PA, driving back last night and getting up a 7 this morning probably didn't help. Just going out to get gas in the neighborhood. I'm 5 cars back as we go through an intersection, few hundred feet up, the the second car pulls over and stops (one lane road). the lead car is taking a left. no oncoming traffic at all, she's taking a left for 20 seconds. We're all sitting there behind the second car watching the lead car sit slightly pulled left, signal on, for a full 20 seconds. Lots of beeping. Very open road, you can plainly see no oncoming traffic. I FOOLISHLY decide to run up the left side of the cars, very cautiously at 5MPH or so, the woman taking a left finally starts to take the left. I plan on driving through where she is, when she stops. Simultaneously, the second car that was stopped, starts to drive into me. Panic brake, bike goes down, short slide. the lady turning keeps yelling, "I had my blinker on." over and over. I pick the bike up, start it and go get gas. Come back home, most of the skin on my knee is gone, hip is banged up, forearm a little as well. very sore now. Will be more tomorrow. Helmet has a serious scuff on the right side. Without it, I'd be in the hospital. All in all, this was a very inexpensive lesson learned and glad I could at low speed with minimal damage to me and the bike.

I'm not trying to knock you when you're down. The point I'm trying to make is that when you ride on the street, you need to do everything by the book. It's dangerous enough out there without adding to the risk. You got lucky this time, relatively speaking. Be careful when you ride and go out and buy some more riding gear. Motorcycle specific leather, from head to toe, from a good manufacturer. Cheers, JR |

Shaun,
You darn well better not bite it on a bike! It would be a loss of epic proportion for a variety of reasons, first is I like the way you think, 'cause you make me think. You are a gosh darn fair minded guy, and the world can't be wasting men like you on motorcycles like that. And for a huge selfish on my part reason, where the heck am I gonna get good book reading recommendations! Now you be careful! (and I ain't BSing you on this). I enjoy your opinions very much.

Ah, I thought you'd posted the pictures backwards. You can't really tell the bottom pic is the repair. Glad it was inexpensive both of property and you. Really, probably the perfect lesson. Just painful enough for you to remember but relatively cheap.
When I was much younger, I had a similar lesson driving drunk. That one time was enough to wake me up and teach me a lesson and the cost was just a replaced tire/wheel and headlight. Again, glad you're OK (relatively)

What are you talking about? That's the best time to kick someone. They're already down.

Looks like a fun ride. I got off those things before they became what they are now.
The lesson "learned' is that auto drivers don't see m/c's. |

Thanks Dan. With a friend like you, all the more reason to drive extra safely. Shame I can't post on PARF anymore, I've changed my mind on many occasions and been significantly better informed because of you. i took the bike out today and was very careful, and will continue to be. This was a blessing in disguise and am now a better rider for it.

Paul, here's one of the 2 Martini shirts coming out next. Other will be a little "arty" focusing on the stripes.
![]() "the," now that's funny and poignant. ![]() Denis, I'm intimately aquatinted with the shoe size of many Pelicans. Greg, yes, jeans. I've got to do some shopping. Love my Furygan leather jacket but need a summer one, and need something for my legs. Otherwise I am well-outfitted. Chris, unfortunately, this bike will never leave me, even if I just put it in the living room someday as art. JR, Milt, lots of lessons learned, but yeah, car drivers are completely clueless so it's up to me to keep out of their way. You know, given how loud and bright this bike is, I really am surprised though. Thanks for the well-wishes guys.

Ferrari is next John, but there will definitely be a Ducati shirt by the end of the summer.
I need to find a national sales rep to get a collection into motorsports retailers, events, etc.

Well, no lecture for you, obviously, but its a great example of why I try never to get on a bike without a jacket, boots and leather pants-you can't protect yourself against the big stuff, really-if you get hit or hit something no gear is really likely to prevent injury, but if you just fall, even at a good clip, gear means you often walk unscathed. Roadrash sucks.
Had a 60 mph lowside last year, tore up my 749 pretty well (fixed now, better than new) but other than trashing my helmet and scuffing my leathers, I was fine. Some nice used Vanson perf'd pants on ebay at the moment...

thanks Michael, got a new helmet, first thing.
Greg, Vanson is local to me so going down soon (can visit the dyehouse I use too), bet they'll have some good deals and want to buy the right fit before buying used. Glad to hear you did so well at 60, I can't even imagine that! Thanks A.
