Flight 93 Memorial
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090507/ap_on_re_us/us_flight93_memorial
I know this has been posted before but this pisses me off. There should be a memorial but 2,200 acres WTF!! So these seven land owners (two of which that own the majority of the outstanding 500 acres to be seized) are screwed. |

And yet we can hardly afford a flag and headstone for fallen soldiers, doesn't make much sense to me. I agree a memorial is appropriate but $58 mil! Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that about the size of Manhattan.
"The seven property owners own about 500 acres still needed for what will ultimately be a $58 million, 2,200-acre permanent memorial and national park at the crash site near Shanksville, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh." |

Wow... I didn't know all the people who died in the crash are... or will be... buried there.
Sacred Ground As the final resting place for the passengers and crew of Flight 93, the Sacred Ground is the focus of the Field of Honor. Here is where the plane crashed and a grove of hemlock trees absorbed the impact and inferno. The public can closely view the crash site from a plaza along its edge, which breaks the continuity of the circular Field of Honor. http://www.nps.gov/flni/parkmgmt/the-memorial-design.htm

AP just reported on the $17 billion in spending cuts. This pig of a memorial could be cut by 2/3 in my opinion. The Vietnam cost tax payers 4.2 million (+9 mil in private donations).

Can't we remember people in a more humble manner, this is just a ridiculous waste of tax $$.

I know I already said this in the other thread, but it bears repeating. 2,200 acres is 5 times the size of Disneyland, including Downtown Disney. 5 times.
I think there are some other plans for that land that no one is talking about, and the people who don't want to sell are getting a major screw-job.

Other plans? I agree the whole thing stinks, but what do you mean? What other plans could there be?

It's like those roadside crosses everywhere in the south; not really appropriate but hard to argue against. Not sure why the U.S. Government has to bless everything to make it official. Sort of an apology, maybe.

Where is the ACLU? This is an amazing spin on imminent domain, and for what purpose?
Who would go to this "place".

2200 acres is frikkin' insane. 220 acres would be large, IMHO. This entire memorial could be tastefully done and appropriately reverent on 22 acres or even 2.2 acres.
2200 acres is ridiculous.

I am going to try and find the post I did here (may have been when I was Singpilot) about 'stumbling' into the site when buying a set of Fuchs from an ad while in NYC not long after 9/11.
I bought them from the guy whose property the plane came down on. I would have said 10 to 15 acres would have handled it. He said he had already been told he was going to lose it to eminent domain. But he wanted as far away from there as possible, so that was OK with him. The Pittburgh PCA came in and 'rescued' his P-car stash (took 8 semi loads full). I got them involved after he said he was gonna walk on it all. I heard he found a place and had picked up the hobby again. I'll see if I can find the post, or resurrect it from my own archives. |

This idea is wrong on so many levels. What when 8 years later they still can't do anything with the WTC. The Pentagon memorial is next to a busy highway. I wonder what 2200 acres laid on top of Arlington, VA would have looked like? Odd, the things that get memorialized and what doesn't. Manassas, VA nearly lost a civil war battlefield to a shopping mall. Atlanta did.

I was in the Pentagon memorial section as soon as it opened. That must have been five years ago. And the outside of the bldg. was fixed in almost no time. That Ground Zero is still empty is a crying shame. They should rebuild the twin towers exactly as they were and make them one story higher, maybe a third tower to make it the shape of us giving the middle finger.
I've done that drive on the PA Tpk. countless times, as I went to Pitt. I still wouldn't bother making the detour to see that memorial.

Ego trumps patriotism.
The "freedom tower" is all about ego-stroking at this point. It's a giant pecker-measuring contest instead of what it should be about - a gigantic "FU" to the terrorists. Instead we're giving them exactly what they wanted - for us to become our own worst enemies and tear ourselves apart.

They rebuilt the part that the plane hit in less than one year from the date. In fact, they section they rebuilt was 5x the size of what was hit by the plane. Who says the government can't get something done?
