Parking Etiquette ?
So I took an angled parking spot that some dude coming from the opposite direction was waiting for. He was stopped waiting for it with his signal on before I got there, but he couldn't turn into it because of the cars in front of me. If the spaces were all at a right angle, and the guy was waiting there with his signal on, I would not have taken it. If I was in his position, and I have been many times, because it is an angled space, I always considered cars on the same side of the street as the angled spaces as having priority, kinda like parallel spaces.
Yeah, dude was pissed. Was I wrong?

You knew he was waiting as indicated by both his position and use of turn signal.
Yes, you were wrong. Life is full of opportunities to extend other people small courtesies. Little acts of kindness that smooth the way in this often very rough world. That would have been an appropriate time. angela

Tough call...
I'd say if it was a narrow street and he had a large vehicle (tuck) and was not able to get into the spot in one "swoop", then it's not his. On the other hand, he did spot it first and "claimed" it with his signal light. Technically, he's on the wrong side of the street. Was there a double solid yellow line? Out of courtesy I would have let him have it; or if I was driving around for a long time looking for a spot then maybe I wouldn't have, but likely would not have been the case. Each case is different.

Check your car and see if the dude left you a present to remember him by.

There is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to a parking space, so why not stop worrying about it and choose "kind" instead and keep the karma battery charged.

X2.
Had you done that to me we would have had a conversation. I find that people have forgotten manners. I kinda look at situations as if I were using my Grandfathers eyes. Ya know when people held the door for someone following behind them, Holding the door for a lady and allowing her to go through before me,(which also lets me eyeball her rear end.) no hat inside, not grabbing something someone else was waiting for.

If you'd pulled that around here, you'd have gotten your ass beaten. Seriously - I've seen fights break out between grown adults over parking spaces.
If not, you'd have definitely gotten your car keyed.

From the perspective of pointless conflict avoidance and avoiding vandalism, I would have let the guy have the spot, if I had noticed him.
ya dick... ;-) (just kidding)

I cant say that I get into many "parking spot conflicts" but 90% of the time I would just let them have it. I would rather not have my tires slashed or car keyed.
Most times I park far away in a large parking lot anyways. |

Porsches get the right of way, first dibs on parking spaces, free red zone parking and are allowed to speed.
You were correct. People in Porsches can do nothing wrong. How did you even see him? I usually don't even notice other drivers on the road.

And there is that... I have had skinny white boys jump out of the car and pull a gangsta attitude on me... not worth it IMHO.

If the other guy was waiting longer and had his turn signal on, you blew it.

Were you driving a Porsche? If so, you added another bit of ammo to the wonderful image we have as bags of douche.
I park on a crowded street w/ angle parking on both sides everyday. I would have stopped and let him turn in front of me, I like getting out of my car with at least one person liking me versus wanting to fight. Technically speaking, you are actually correct that he could not "hold" the space the way that he could if he were on the right side of the road. (Meaning waiting for a car to leave by sitting behind it w/ signal on, giving parked/leaving car enough room to pull-out). The bottom line is that there is always another parking spot 2 minutes later, I don't need to degrade myself by being rude. This actually opens a whole 'nother can of worms regarding parking etiquette. I feel like many people need a class in it. My biggest peeve is when someone blocks the (only) traffic lane for 5 minutes while waiting for someone to load their car and leave an angle spot. This usually results in a line of cars a block long laying on their horns and makes EVERYONE within earshot pissed-off. Pull over to the right, for chrisakes!! WTF is wrong with people?? Rick is right. Common sense, common courtesy and manners are in short supply. I do my best to tilt the scale the other way by showing low-class people how it's done in public. And by class, I'm not referring to rich/poor. I've seen more affluent people who need to be slapped than poor people. Lastly, I think that it's easy to imagine that there was a time not long ago when everyone had manners, nice fantasy but not true. There were always idiots walking around. |
