Anyone buy a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep today?

Evidently today is the last day to purchase them from a lot, with warranty.

Yeah, right! Like any of you guys are busting down the doors for a Neon...

You know...I feel sorry for the Chrysler dealers who got screwed...but no, I bought a Ford...the only domestic car maker to not voluntarily become a ward of the state.

Just heard that they may extend it by a week. What a cluster**** for the dealers. The dealers do not cost Chrysler money but they are using this as many companies did after 9/11 at a crutch to do anything that they want.

Sad to see...

I'm still interested in a 300 C SRT or a Dodge Charger - something big and polluting.

Maybe a dodge challenger would be a smart buy. ...kind of a "last of a classic" buy.

...but what about future parts?

Maybe a dodge challenger and lot's of bubble-wrap.

I watched C-Span last week and to say that the dealers are getting a good ol'fashion banging without KY is an understatement...........I don't see how anyone is going to benefit from the re-structuring except for the executives at Chrysler and the union.

You can add Obama administration bureaucrats to the list of those who benefit...

They're so cheap now, they're cheap enough to be unreliable. Drive it for a year, then ditch it.

Yeah, but who is standing behind the warranty?

Why do you guys feel able to tell Chrysler that it must have multiple small dealerships in a city, rather than a couple of large ones? Isn't that Chrysler's business decision to make? The company has wanted to do this for decades, and bankruptcy now gives it the power to act.

Wait - are you talking about the cars, or the automaker execs, the government bail-out bureaucrats, and the unions?

Or both?!?

So, just how good are the deals? Any chance some of the doomed dealers are firesaling used cars too? I'd love a truck.

But that's not what's happening. Maybe in some places, but certainly not here. As of today, there are no Chrysler/Jeep dealerships on the Peninsula. Nothing between San Jose and Marin.

If you live in Redwood City or San Mateo, are you going to buy a car in San Jose or Marin and go there for service? Or over a bridge in the East Bay? No, you'll buy another brand close to home.

Maybe Chrysler is making a bad decision. Who knows, won't be the first.

But on the one hand, everyone worries that the govt won't let the automakers make their own business decisions and/or use the full power of BK, and on the other hand, when an automaker does do exactly that with its dealer network, suddenly everyone is up in arms about it.

screw Dodge what about Porsche?

From Autoblog:

Porsche has been the embodiment of how an auto manufacturer is supposed to be run for quite some time. It has consistently kept itself from running deep in the red and has reliably made more profit per unit sold than any other manufacturer.

So it is with great shock that the Porsche empire may have been technically broke in March. The money needed to take a 51% controlling stake in Volkswagen was burrowed from the banks, pulling the company into a €9 billion ($12.6 billion) hole. The situation was so bad in March that, rumor has it, the company didn’t have one cent to its name for two days. It had to borrow €700 million—approximately $980 million—from Volkswagen to make it through until it secured another line of credit.

At this time, Porsche is looking for another €1.75 billion ($2.5 billion) in financing. If crunch time hits before then, Porsche will likely have to sell off assets or seek government assistance.

I read somewhere (Yahoo News IIRC) that there was a dealer in either VA or NC who was selling Dodge Nitros at 40% below MSRP. These dealers that are closing need to liquidate their inventory, and given the way they were told to close shop have little or no loyalty to Chrysler.

Given the circumstances, you should be able to find some smokin' deals. On the other hand, hopefully you'll be able to find a dealer close enough to you which won't be closed down to make it worth the effort. Which brings up another point - servicing a new car at a dealership other than where you purchased it can be problematic - I've seen this first hand.

Having said that, I certainly wouldn't mind a Viper sitting in my driveway....
