Snakes are back!

So I'm out in yard boopin' around.

I spotted a couple 4 foot long snakes.
I caught them and showed them to the kids staying with us.

I put the snake back and went back to foolin' around under my car.
Before I know it I feel a snake up against and then over my leg.
If I was scared of snakes that would have done me in, I'm sure.

Last year there were four of them all over the yard.

On the way back from the lake today, we saw several on the side of the road. They were not the kind you pick up and show the kids. Have already had a string of 95F+ days up here.

You found the time to take pix of a snake, yet there are no pix of your garden?

Did it piss on you?

HA! My son came in with a snake today. I thought it was one of the rubber toy ones from his outside toy collection. Then I saw it moving across the floor and freaked out! Last I saw it, it was in the sandbox in the back yard. My daughter was playing with it too. It was not as big as yours but it was fun for the kids. A little garter snake about a foot long...

Wow, I love the yard, not so crazy about the snakes though. Are those your vines? More yard/neighbourhood pics please

I went out and snapped some shots. Just a minute, garden shots first.

yard is a little overgrown with this rain and nice weather we've been having.
I have no vines, but there are vineyard views out of *every* window of the house.

The pattern on the gopher snake is too close to the rattler for me.

The snakes were right next to my BBQ area and came out the adjoining vineyard.
I live in the Carneros growing region. Big vineyard across the street.

We saw a jack rabbit this morning as big as a dog! ( or a small pony )

You gotta be kidding me. They don't look remotely similar. Gophers don't have rattles and they don't have anything close to the jaw shape of a pit viper. Do you kill every frog you see in case one might be poisonous?

These snakes tried to fool me with the 'tough guy' act. False strikes, hissing and coiling.

After they realized I wasn't buying it and had them in my grasp, they pretty much gave up.
Strong muscles. I was very gentle with them. I didn't want to hurt them.

We have a serious mole/vole problem, so I like them doing their job around here.

I like snakes too, have one in one of the barns I store parts in at the farm, him hanging down from the rafters can catch you off guard. I like hiving them there, they keep other things out. After I pointed him out to one trusterd friend, he will no longer go down there with me

Brings back memories. The meat was fed to the pigs. I would pin the skin to a board, salt heavily and toss onto the roof for two or three days. Oh yea, they peal just like bananas!
