Need potty training tips...

No not for me, for my 2yr old daughter. She's a young 2, (2yrs 3 mo) but she's really getting the hang of it. The problem is that she has most accidents when her clothes are on. if we leave her naked, then she seems to be aware of herself and will be more apt to use the potty. Obviously, this isn't a good long-term solution.
If anyone has any tips, dos or don'ts, I'm all ears!

Wow....when was your daughter born? Mine is right around the same age. We noticed our big breakthrough when she became increasingly uncomfortable being wet in her pullups. We also started to reward her for going in the toilet (5 M&Ms). She really getting the hang of it over that last 3 days.

Does your daughter go to daycare?

She was born 2/16/07.
Yeah, our daughter gets a chip when she goes on the potty.
She does not go to daycare, so hopefully that will lead to an easier/faster transition.
So you use pull-ups, huh? I've heard mixed things about that. The pros are obvious, but the negatives are that they are too much like regular diapers and the kids don't mind going in them. But that doesn't sound like the case with your daughter. So she still feels the uncomfortable wetness even with the pull-up?

I wonder after she gets the hang of this, how long will it take before she makes it through the night.

What helped with us is let the kids pick out their own really cool underpants. If they have an accident in them, they'll be more upset when they're ruined... Be patient though, it's still early, even for a girl. (Boys often wait untill 3!)

We used a reward board w/ stickers and a prize after so many stickers. We've also tired jelly beans as rewards. My daughter was just under 2 when she started to "self train," but in the middle of it her little brother was born and since he wears diapers... Fast forward to today, she just turned 3 and we're still not 100% potty trained. She knows how to go and can do so on her own, including wiping, flushing, washing her hands, etc. but just choses not to sometimes.

Our greatest success recently has come from one of her friends that's potty trained. It's almost become a competition between them to see who can go longer w/o an accident. Who says peer pressure is a bad thing

After I posted I realized my daughter is about 6 months ahead of yours. You're doing great if she's at least showing an interest let alone trying to go. My daughter is at the point where just going in her diaper makes her uncomfortable. The big plus about her going to daycare is that she gets to see the slightly older girls go on the toilet when gives a big boost to the acceptance factor.
The thing to watch for is how long they can hold their pea throughout the day. Just the other day, she woke up in the morning and her diaper was dry.

We kept a small glass of Reese's Pieces in the medicine cabinet and rewarded a successful toilet usage with 3 or 4. I don't remember what age it was.

You say you're giving your daughter a chip... I assume you mean a potato chip... if she prefers that to something sweet, go with it.

I wonder if a successful #2 should receive a greater award than a #1. Hmmm. Ideas?

We give our daughter 5 M&Ms for going "#1". If she did "#2", I think I'd take my truck to Costco and get a pallet of M&Ms

We give bigger rewards for #2. Her ultimate reward is Daddy will start building her a blue Porsche, once she's fully potty trained. I'll be a small battery powered car built off of a kid sized 4 wheeler. The wife has mixed feelings about it, but Kiera and I think it's a great idea

Wait a second... it's been a coupla decades and I'm outta touch... no front seat (facing forward) until they're four or something because of the airbag, right?

Take her to daycare. Combination of peer pressure and guidance from trained professionals works wonders.

I'm on kid #2 right now. I just ask them to let me know when they're done

Front facing is usually over a year old once they stop being infants. My 88 doesn't have airbags but the seat belts don't cinch tight so it has no lock. I haven't tried to find a solution yet.

She might just not be ready. Here's our story in a nutshell. Our daughter is a similar age - 2 years 10 months (she'll be 3 in late July). We tried potty training her last summer (just after her 2nd birthday) and it was a miserable failure. We tried training underwear, letting her go naked, putting her on the potty every 10 minutes. Nothing worked, and she just got frustrated. I did some reading and came to the conclusion that she just wasn't ready - she didn't dislike sitting in a wet diaper, didn't "get" not peeing on Dora on her underwear, etc. So we started back on diapers over the past winter. We'd still put her on the potty or toilet sometimes, and of course praised her like crazy, but didn't really push it at all.

Over the last few months she started showing 2 signs she was ready: some discomfort in wet diapers, and enjoyment of using public toilets (I know, weird!). So we really started in earnest about a month or so ago. Lo and behold, today marked the completion of one week of no accidents or dirty diapers (save for naps and overnight, of course). It was all just a question of when she was ready.

So I'd suggest leave it for a while - now you've introduced to her the concept, and she'll likely remember that. Wait until she's ready and try again.

I read somewhere that if you push them to potty train when they're 2, they won't be 100% potty trained by the time they're 4. If you let them do it on their own (with guidance), they'll most likely be 100% by the time they're 3. I think that info cam from the American Academy of Pediatrics....

That's how we did it. Our daughter came home from daycare potty trained.

Update: We picked up our daughter from daycare today and she went on the toilet 5 times and pooped 2 out of the 5 times with no accidents. My wife and I are soooooo stoked!

wow. lots of good info here. thanks everyone. she did good today... only one accident... but i'm still not sure she's ready. she won't tell us that she has to go... we have to ask her literally every 5 minutes. if she answers a quick "no" then she doesn't. if she doesn't answer or thinks about it, then it's a yes. she never says "yes" or tells us first. she's not fighting it, so i guess we'll keep it up and see how it goes. she also has a baby sister (8mos), and we tell her that she's a "big kid". she likes that. so she says, "i'm a big kid...baby's go in diapers...big kids go on the potty." i know she's young, but i think she's on the right track... or i'm just deliousional!
