Has the education in this country really been that bad?

50 % of the posters on this forum, and even more on the less sophisticated forums (well, this is a Porsche related site), can't seem to figure out the difference between "your" and "you're." I won't go into the 3 forms of "there." I've made that mistake not thinking. I probably made the first mistake as well somewhere.

I know, this has been brought up countless times, but what I really want to know is how TF did that many get out of school not knowing how to write? Is this error on resumes and such?

Hey, don't give me that business about shortcut writing. If you're texting, it's "ur."

Why don't we do everyone a favor and change it all to ur? While we're at this, let's make those 3 words that sound like "ther" be just that. And, we can solve another problem for way too many by using "tu" for to, too and two, although "two" is not often misused.

Everyone would be more educated.

BTW, one of my favorites is TABS not being able to distinguish between quiet and quite.

OK, flame away, it's a Friday afternoon. (Or is that its? )

It's our own damn fault.

We, as a country, tolerate it.

The nuns *****-slapped good grammar and spelling skills into me.

What I did end up with, however, was a distaste for women dressed in black.

P.S. the word ***** was, in fact correctly spelled.

I think the grammar would improve if we were being graded. Here, everything usually degrades.

Milt,

The whole world is going to S***. There is stupidity lurking around every corner, not to mention a lack of ethics, decent moral values, productivity, you name it.

I have half a mind to sell off most of my posessions and build a small house somewhere in the boonies and just check out. Off of the grid. Anonymous. No ties to anything....

Don't blame the NEA though...they only teach, right? The fact that today's crop of high school grads read and write at what used to be a 7th grade level is all the fault of the parents.

I'm with you Milt. I can't F'ing stand it when guys use the wrong word or spelling. Sometimes I will correct but usually just shake my head. I guess I just thought it was the bad education and not caring by the poster....but it drives me crazy too...

Thanks to your brave post I will call guys on it more often now..and tell them to flame you ...not me.

I think this thread will lead to an easy identification of who on this board is a "Boomer" or Depression Baby, without asking.

How about ending a sentence with a preposition?

California kid was walking through Harvard Yard and stopped a professor and said "Excuse me professor, could you tell me where the library is at". The professor responds "Young man, at Harvard we don't end sentences with a preposition, would you care to rephrase your sentence and try again". So the kid says "Excuse me professor, can you tell me where the library is at,
a $ $ hole

I find it puzzling that similar-sounding words are being substituted so often nowadays. I'm not seeing as much of a decline in general grammar or spelling. I wonder if it has to do with computer spell-checking - the computer alerts you if you misspell "break", but not if you should have used "brake" instead.

I admit, my own grammar and spelling on PPOT has deteriorated since I began posting via the iPhone.

If it makes us feel better, French kids are writing to each other in horrid "SMS French" and if you browse French Internet forums you'll find some unimpressive grammar and spelling too. Despite that country focusing more on the basic school R's that nearly any other.

It's been a long time since I cracked open a grammar book, but I think I may have committed that transgression in that sentence.

It would have been better written as, "I probably made the first mistake somewhere as well."

Oh, somewhere and well.
