Emtional Roller Coaster

I've been on one for two weeks now. Monday the 11th was the last week of my final semester in school and bad news started rolling in on Tuesday. A good friend of mine suffered a massive heart attack at the Capitol in Austin. No one knows how long he was in the elevator, but the team of paramedics, including at least one his fellow colleagues, worked their magic. He's been in ICU since, but is getting better. I had a chance to see him yesterday and it looks as if he'll make a full recovery.

Today my nephew (3) drowned. His dad pulled his lifeless body from the bottom of the pool. He was revived poolside but has complications breathing.

To say I'm extremely close to this boy would be an understatement. He always wants to play in uncle John John's (me) black car (the 944). All I can do is comfort my brother by telling him that the Dr.'s are very good, they know how to handle this type of situation and he's going to be ok. Maybe if I was better equipped with words of encouragement for my brother and his wife, I could handle this one better myself.

Pull through little buddy! We have so much more fun to have!

Very sorry to hear. This is simply an awful year for so many of us in so many ways... I hope things turn around for you and that your nephew recovers without complications.

You need to be okay for yourself before you can be okay for the others.
I will remember the little one in the prayers

Sadder than sad. So sorry to hear of your nephew. A tragedy that happens all to often. We mandate child safety seats, perhaps hard pool covers should be next.

My thoughts and prayer to your nephew and friend and the whole family.
Your brother won't care you use the right words but to feel you're with them in these difficult moments.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

When I read about your nephew, I got tears in my eyes.

I certainly hope the best for the both of them and for you to be as helpful and supportive as you are able.

There were life vests or floaties on all of the 12 or more kids when they were swimming, and parents were around the pool at all times. They took his off so he could munch on some m&m's and ready up for meal time, but he wound up a blue body on the bottom. No one noticed he went into the water. He's pulling through this one guys. He's responsive, but still has some fluid in his lungs. Vomit most likely they say.

Tarping off pools and not letting them enjoy it didn't seem like a logical solution, but I could swim at 3 and times have changed, so now it does now.

Thanks for the prayers!

I'm sure this will work out OK, we'll definitely be thinking of you. I can't imagine how frightening that must have been.

When we had our pool in California the first thing we did was teach my little one to swim without floaties. He was probably about 2 at the time. Once your nephew has recovered get a professional instructor for him as soon as you can. It wasn't the sort of thing you'd want to do yourself and it wasn't much fun for the little one to start with but essential. Kids get to rely on floaties and panic if they fall in without them and start sinking. You can probably find a teacher that will come to his own pool and will teach him not just how to swim but to swim to the steps as a matter of routine.

I know you all have other things on your mind at the moment but I hope it helps in future.

Horrible to hear, I can't imagine what everyone is going through. Hopefully he pulls through with a complete recovery.

Life vests and floaties are very dangerous, IMO. They are banned at almost all of the community pools in our area because of the danger. Kids who are around water should be taught to swim, it can easily be done even as young as the age of 2, or they shouldn't be in the water (they are taught to swim, and turn over and float on their back to breathe/rest). Hopefully everyone with small kids who read this thread learn from it.

Best wishes to your little guy!
