Do you really think that a really cheap, 25 year-old GTI, owned by a kid, is going to be a good car?

You good at picking lottery nuumbers? I might buy one.

Ya fix what ya got...right now I am watching an 88 944 Turbo with 13,000 miles....beautiful car...yet I will pass...

Now spoons on the other hand...well with those U can never have too many. However the price one pays vs what it can/does sell for is what makes it worth while.

java- when I said he was young... I meant like mid 20's to mid 30's. On the VW forums he's got two other nice, newer VW's ($$) so I'm thinking he's not a punk kid.

I keep thinking about it and I sure do need to put the money into my Porsches instead but this just seems like such a good deal right now, I got a feeling I'll be kicking myself later. I passed up a $500 miata a friend was selling 4 years ago and I am still kicking myself for not buying it and turning it into an autocrosser.

........ aaaand thus the great 1 day excitement over the VW ends.

I just blew a ton of money on a last minute plane ticket to SoCal for work purposes. I was planning on driving but need to leave later and so plane it was. That took a good chunk out of the $750 of that car...

I'm just going to have to bring my 944 up to Tulsa to prove to you that not all kids are hard on stuff or screw it up. Ask any of the guys in the PCA down here about my ride.

Okay. We get together every Saturday morning at the Wild Fork restaurant for breakfast. It starts at 8:00, so you might have to get up early.

Let me know if you need directions.

If I found a nice mk 1 GTi for $750 I would buy it for a fun car. But for $750, can it be good? What do these go for? I wish I had not seen this thread.

Hey, here is a question. A mk 1 GTi may not be the safest car (thinking for teen daughter when it's time). But suppose you had a rollcage built in it. Would that make it pretty safe in a crash? Or is the rollcage only okay for a helmeted, 5-point belted occupant?

If you are thinking safety of a teen daughter driving one... think about where it will be driven... in town? 35-40 mph most of the time? As someone who has been in a few car accidents.. I wouldn't be too concerned unless the person driving is an irresponsible driver.

A full cage protects the driver during rollovers, but also a good set of gusseted cross bars or nascar bars in the door area would make it impermeable to side impact.

Sidney - I'd take a look at it for you if I had time but I am getting ready to leave for California on business. I'm an hour and a half away from Clayton here. From what my friend tells me the owner is a straight up guy and will tell it like it is. The STL VW people are all pretty nice, I've hung out with them before and it's a real honest community.

I'd give the dude a call, just feel it out. I still honestly want the car but it just isn't in the cards right now. I almost called him on the phone today and offered $650 in cash as he said on the forums he is pretty motivated (job loss maybe) and has two other VW's.

If you goto the forums on STLVW.org and search for "Jens" you will find his posts (that is his real name..) and some more pics of the car.

There are some other pelicans that live in that area that may be able to take a look at it.
Rick-l is one.

Hmm. I'm mixed. I had kinda been looking for a 914 or another 944 to make a full time Autocrosser but this could be fun too. You think it would survive a 600 mile drive home? It would be easier for me to fly and drive it than for my dad to come with and drive and trailer it.

By the time I got the dude to answer the phone he says someone has spoken for it. Which one of ya bought my rabbit? Guess its back to my more local hunt for an autocross beater.

And internally. The suspension is different. A LOT more wheel travel (really needed) on the 85+.

They don't look that much alike, I don't think. Totally new body and pan from MK I to Mark II.

I've owned one of each - both GTI's. Both FUN.

BTW, the later Mark II's had the 16V as an option. Less grunt, more top end.
