sister and my BIL need to live apart. the economy is sucking.

sis just started a law practice. doing great, very successful...my BIL's office just got closed, and he will commute to Houston. yup, denver to houston. he hopes to get a cheapo apartment. cant be cheap to manage essentially two households. anyone doing this?

i think it would be cheaper to quit and find a lesser job.

That will not contribute to a healthy marriage, IMO.

Where in Houston? It might be cheaper to buy something.

Are you kidding? If I could only see my wife 1 or 2 days per week, I'd be stoked! Guess you haven't been married long...

There aren't any offices in Denver that need a lawyer?

I think I would be looking for a new job before moving away. Maybe do the commute but look back at home via contacts?

Obviously, you know the situation better than us but it will be tough on the marriage.

Good luck to them.

i dont get along particularly well with sis, but i wish her the best. she is a lawyer in denver. she worked for a patent attorney that was going in the wrong direction in the ways of business, and customer service. my sister took a chance, quit, and started her own small firm. every one of the old clients jumped ship and went with her. her business was afloat from the get go. i am proud. old boss, went chap11.

BIL is a geologist, i think. he is going to houston. i think she should be the one going back and forth. she doenst meet with clients everyday. she is big sister and doesnt listen to me, anyways.

what is a good house in houston going for anyways? us kids have bad memories of houston. MD anderson, my dad spent lots of time there.

Lots of us have done that many times. It is the price you pay when both are professionals. Sooner or later, something will open up where both can be together.

I can get you prices and nice neighborhoods, if you can tell me where he will be working. I expect he'll want a condo some place close to his office.

If they don't have children, this is fine. With kids I would not recommend it. I once commuted for half a year and it sucked.

We did it once...for three years. It's not conducive to a long marriage. We were lucky. Best wishes for your Sis & BIL.

If I did not have kids, I could swing this. OTOH, if I would not have kids and a stay home wife, my burn rate would be a lot less and I would just stay with the wife and enjoy unemployment for a while. Why do people work so hard if they are DINKS? You can easily support a bum husband if you are a lawyer.

I've done the long distance commute a couple of times. Once, when my kids were 12, 10 and 6! It will make your marriage stronger or destroy it completely. I just celebrated my 30th last December.

I once lived in Algeria (that's right, North Africa), while my wife and kids were in Houston. It was 10 and 2 - 10 weeks on, 2 weeks home. Did that for a year. Another time I lived in Lake Charles, LA while the family was in Houston. I came home every weekend. Did that for about 2 years.

I wouldn't recommend it unless thier marriage is REALLY strong.

Oil industry?

Back to the original topic. Houston is very cheap/low cost of living. Being a Geologist, he should do well in Houston. Good luck to them.

Do what you've got to do. My wife and I lived apart for several months during the last recession. You do what it takes. Right now they should just be glad they have jobs at all, suck it up and tough it out for a few months until things improve and other, more desirable options become available.

He should get in contact with Randy Marsh near Denver. He's a world-famous geologist.
