My New(ish) car
Folks, I am quite happy to be a part of the Pelican family, mostly because I like the smart and smart-azzed people here. I thank you for accepting me even though I am not a Porsche owner.
Here is the car I have been working on for the last 4.5 years. A 1971 Opel GT with an engine from a 88 Ford Thuderbird complete with turbo and intercooler. It's been a long road, but from the way I feel, it's been worth ever drop of blood, sweat and tears. Here she is.... ![]() |

Looks fantastic! I love driving cars that you don't see everyday... or week...
I prefer rare-er cars, and that is almost ultra-rare!

Fellow Pelicans! Consider me fortunate....why? Because my wife and I are still alive.
There we are this evening, the first time I have had the GT above 60, and all of a sudden there is a LOUD BANG and the left rear portion of the car falls down. I muscle the car off to the right and get out...THE WHOLE MF'N SON OF FRIGGN BIATCH TIRE FELL OFF!!!! No wear on the studs, just a little discoloration on the END of the studs and one is a little bent. It's like they put the wrong size studs on the studs/wheel. Oh and yes the shop did have all 4 tires off at one point AND I had driven the car a ton on those wheels/tires and plenty at high speed. Its like they just screwed them on by hand or used the wrong size lugs. Never found the tire, no damage to the car (other than obviously the read diff as it was slammed on the pavement). Just saying glad to be alive. I had the car towed to the shop and left a message with them..we'll see how they react since obviously they are responsible for it. They better play nice since my best friend is an attorney, I work for a HUGE lawfirm and so does my wife. I'll keep you up to date but WTF? Thanks folks. Paulie |

That had to be a difficult swap...Love the looks of the "baby Corvette"...what we called 'em back in the day.

Duuude - don't know where you live, but I bumped into a guy in Huntington Beach who had built some 4 anger for a bad ass restored Gt - it had sex written all over it. He was also talking about all kinds of other engine swaps - wonder if that was you!
Hope the wheel issue doesn't side line you too much.

I had a '73 GT for awhile and really enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about the wheel falling off... glad no one was hurt... that had to be scary. Hope there's no expensive damage you haven't found yet. Kudos for being able to control it at over 60 MPH.
The paint looks great... would love to see more photos... and the turbo'd T-Bird engine is a great idea... and the cowl-induction hood, too. BTW, please post some interior shots, too. I'm very old school with regards to wheel sizes, so those 17's or whatever they are just look wrong to me. Like it's wearing high heel shoes or something... reminds me of some of the wheels that "Overhaulin" show puts on beautiful classic cars of the 60's & 70's. It becomes the first thing you see when you look at the car... like like if some guy put chrome 20's on the original Bullitt Mustang. Did you have any issues with fitment of the exhaust from the engine on back? The car was not super low, but I imagine it could have presented some problems. Have you relocated the battery? The orignal position out in the nose was a major negative design flaw to be sure.

Really nice looking GT, used to be one of my favorite looking cars. Looks as though alot of Blood, Sweat, and Tears went into it.
Hopefully no serious (unknown) damage anywhere. Gotta have some more pic's, Glad no one was hurt! Karl 88 Targa |
