Home remedies for Chiggers?

Got a whole crap load of chiggers at work yesterday. Anybody got a home remedy to alleviate the itching?


Also since this happened at work can I get on disability?

If you don't want to look like an albino dalmation, check out the poison ivy meds, there's one that has a clear calamine lotion.

Another option for pretty much any time your skin itches is hot water as hot as you can stand it on the area that itches. What it seems to do is trigger the release of all of the histamine (what makes you itch, I think) all at once. It'll itch like mad, hold it under the water until it stops itching. THen it won't itch for hours.

Chiggers do not burrow under your skin, as many people believe, nor do they feed on animal blood. They actually feed on the fluids in skin cells. To get the fluids, they attach themselves to a skin pore or hair follicle and inject a digestive enzyme that ruptures the cells. The enzyme also hardens the surrounding skin tissue, forming a sort of straw for sucking the skin cell fluids. The whole process irritates the skin, causing an itchy red bump that continues to cause discomfort for several days. Chiggers are only about 1/50th of an inch (0.5 mm) in diameter and so are too small to be seen with the naked eye. This invisibility is the reason so many people believe chiggers burrow under the skin.

That only works if the chigger is still there. By the time they itch the little bugger has already vacated the premises.

Call a local pharmacist and ask what is recommended... I would guess a combination of Benadryl taken orally as well as some Benadryl cream.

Also, if you drink enough Scotch it'll stop itching.

or scratch the heck out of till it bleeds then the itch will be gone (but I guess you would have to put up with a sore foot.)

Chiggers are only about 1/50th of an inch (0.5 mm) in diameter and so are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Who are these folks that can't see chiggers? I can see them quite easily. Resolution of the unaided eye should be able to discern .1-.3mm which is easily enough to see chiggers.

I think you need to make up a tomato soup - chocolate pudding poultice. The trick is to add the tomato soup slowly to the chocolate pudding, simmer it over low heat for 5 minutes and then apply it to the affected area with a large wooden spoon while it is still hot.

For quicker results, don't be afraid to add lemon juice, basil leaves, and a small amount of odourless paint thinner.

And cayenne pepper if you want to make yourself into a soup.

The only remedy is prednisone.

My ankles were COVERED a couple of years ago. Still itching after nearly a week so my dad (veterinarian) sent me some prednisone. Next day itching stopped and irritation cleared up.

Chiggers are the absolute worst. Now I wear DEET whenever I go outside near the woods or tall grass.

I got a bad case of the chiggers as a young boy. They were in the area of my frank and beans. I prayed for death. Calamine lotion and hot hot baths if I remember correctly.
