Porsche hate

Just wondering if any of you experience this, the number of insane drivers that feel they have to pass you even though they are in their pickup, rusted-out Subaru or what-have-you. I even had a guy pass me on the interstate then flip me off and I'm going a little over the speed limit.....
The only decent driver was a guy in a corvette who flashed his lights because he wanted to pass and there was a traffic blocking his off-ramp.
I'm not poking along, I'm doing 80 in the 75 mph.

There is Porsche hate, it's mixed in with envy, small car hate, and imported car hate found in the mid-west.

Yesterday I'm driving in my S-10 pick up and leaving three car spaces in front of me and doing the speed limit. The guy behind me for no reason at all changes lanes and passes me, cuts into my lane in front of me and slams on the brakes to make a right hand turn about 50 feet later. I'm sure Mr Hot-Shot would have done the same had I'd been driving the Porsche. An a-Hole is an A-Hole.

The Porsche was the car any person with money wanted in the 70's and 80's. It did have a reputation for "in your face money" back then. I think the sticker on my 89 Carrera was close to $60k back then. Thats about equivalant to $100k now. Thats a lot of 80's cabbage. It showed up in movies usually by a less then likable figure and it never seemed to be forgotten. Chances are those that still have problems with them are in their 40's and older and still reliving their youth. Oh yes, it happens to be a fantastic car also, unlike other 80's rides like Espirits, DeLoreans, and Countachs.

SUV drivers tend to be the clueless ones. Pickup drivers tend to be the ones suffering from "little winky syndrome", with the constant need to weave in and out of lanes, pretend they're racing everyone in sight, ride on peoples' back bumpers (even when the other people are doing 20 over the speed limit), etc. Basically a lot of jerk-off behavior to pretend how tough they are.

There's a fine line between the 'inconsiderate/ inattentive' drivers who are generally not paying the road the level of attention it really needs to drive at the speeds they are going....and those who deliberately do 'stupid' things when they see a P-car.

I have had the UK equivalent of the 'pick-up' driver.. Mr White Van.. demonstrate his acceleration off the line... his lane changing skills and performance of his overloaded van and so forth...all whilst driving the P-car..and yet when driving the Audi (a faster car) but a station wagon all I see are the inattentive drivers...much less aggression directed towards the Audi...

Yep, I've seen people do stupid things when I was driving the 911 that they don't do when I'm driving other stuff. I've gotten a tiny, tiny bit of it in the miata, but not much.

I find a direct correlation between jack-holeness and exhaust mods. The guys driving a stock truck/car no problem, but just about every idiot with a modded (for sound) exhaust feels it's necessary to romp on the gas when they see my car.

Slightly different but in the vein.

My brother had his knee done so had a temp handicap card.

Every morning he'd pull into his local Dunkin Donuts for his coffee and he would park in a handicap spot that he was legally and medically entitled to use.

There's an old grumpy customer there every morning who would glare at him and one day followed him out and started to read him the riot act about "just because you drive a Porsche you think you can do whatever you want etc....."

My brother ignored him and went about his business.

Couple of days later there is a cop in the parking lot and the old guy drags the cop over screaming about the a-hole Porsche owner.

Cop checks my brothers tag and everything was in order. Cop says to my brother, "he seems to have more of a problem with your car than anything else"

Everytime one of these threads comes up I wonder if you guys REALLY think that someone is jealous of your $20K antique car.

It's like that girl on Maury or something that complains she can't get a date because she's too beautiful.

Nobody cares about your car. A-holes are just A-holes, no matter what you're driving.

I drove my 1968 912 from Cali to Md in 1988, April. Red with black interior.

I pull into another roadside attraction off of route 50, Eli, NV.

An older man and his wife stop, look at my car and he says, "Beautiful".

In my experience, it's usually the pick'em-up truck drivers that like to show off their stuff! I never get into it with them....just drive my own pace and do my own thing, so I'm sure they tell their buds about the modified "Porsh" Turbo that they just roasted off the line with their 'Yota Tacoma...

Jealous. That's the underlying factor in this behavior. I drove an old Cadillac around that I got from my mother when she died. I mean it was 15 years old and I got that "Cadillac factor." It wasn't worth 3K, but I got it still. People look at my '88 911 and have no idea. Many think it cost 70K.

It's just ignorance, immaturity....

And BTW, I never assume it's "hate" or "envy" behind their motivation...just stooopidity!

Now that's just naive. People may not "care" about the cars, but many of these same types described above seem to want to demonstrate their car's speed and prowess when they see us. Not sure why, but I have my ideas.

For example, a couple of years ago I was driving a fellow Pelican's '74 911 for a few miles along a winding road - just to get a feel for how his car felt compared to my '84. I'm cruising along this road, not driving too fast at all because the car felt a little different to me, when I came up behind a dually pickup. Then he suddenly shot out of there like a canon and I remember thinking "whoa, that guy is really moving". He made it around about three or four corners before oversteering into a telephone pole and flipping it, ending up upside down in the middle of the road. He was a young guy. He was OK, but drunk. The cops hauled him away.

Last week, at 5AM on the 405 freeway, while driving to work in the 996, I'm cruising along in the #2 lane with my cruise control on and set to 75. Almost nobody is on the freeway because it's a Saturday. Suddenly, some little Honda pulls up from behind and to my right at high speed, sweeps across my tail and proceeds to pull up alongside my left, perfectly even with me. He then starts the whole "wanna drag race?" scenario - you know, revving it up repeatedly, lunging back and forth. I'm thinking "what the hell! Why me?!" I looked over at the two kids in the car and I shook my head "NO" and they just kept at it. They wanted a race. I finally just looked right at them, made eye contact and waved them on. They finally got the message. Sheesh.

It is the cars. The other drivers may, or may not "care" about the Porsches but many of them do seem to feel the need to show our cars up, for whatever reason.

i have never received anything other than waves, nods of approval, thumbs up, or "beautiful car!" while in my 911. its not like driving around in a coutach or something. ever 10th car is a porsche. i think you guys are ignoring the fact that there are an enormous amount of douchebag A-hole humans on this earth.

on my way to work this morning, i go to stop at the stop sign and a pick-up truck driver behind me lays on his horn and comes an inch from my bumper to keep me from stopping ...actually pushing me through the stop sign. If i had been on my motorcycle, i would have followed him home or wherever he was going and pepper sprayed his face and left

i hate people. i truly do. screw the humans

It's true. All my life I've wanted to ride in a Porsche, and meet the high-rollers who drive them.

Sorry Carlos, but that IS poking along!
Don't have this problem in the TT, I love just leaving them all behind.
Craziest ones around here drive mini-vans with a close second to the pickups.
