Ccleaner for computer
Does anyone have any experience with Ccleaner?
Link I found using Google: http://www.ccleaner.com/ I was watching the U of M research channel last night. A local comouter guy (Mr. Jaffer of Jafferson Computers) was lecturing on computer maintenance. He recommended using Ccleaner (it's free) along with virus protection and adware protection. I have never heard of this from my local computer guys MCRS. One of the features is it eliminates registery backups and uninstall programs which tie up a lot of RAM. The Ccleaner program has it's own way of uninstalling programs. He said in his analogy that it does not really remove the uninstall programs but stores them compactly. Imagine a house, you clean the junk out of the house and store it on shelves in the garage so that it's out of the way. Claims are that by using this program your computer will work faster.

I love this tool for PC's. I usually set it for maintenance at night along with a defrag and then I have it restart for the morning. The registry cleaner part has also helped me repair BSOD's with registry issues.

Been using it for a few years - works well. It's not a virus scanner or an adware remover - but it does a good job of cleaning things up.

CCleaner Update:
My wife's used Dell laptop(XP operating system) was acting slow so she decided to try CCleaner. After installation it indeed was working faster and better, then she tried to power down and restart. It asked her if she wanted to back up the registery, which she said "yes' to, and the screen went all black never to return. I did a Google search on this problem and found out it does happen from time to time (not often). The fix is to reinstall everything, but because this was a used computer with no original backup discs this was not possible. We took it back to the shop, and for $177 they got it to work and were able to save her documents/photos, but she had to reload all the programs and updates herself. Do not use CCleaner unless you have backed up everything and have backup operating system disc.

Excellent utility. Windows programs are notorious for shotgunning files all over the place, modifying registry settings, etc. Also, uninstall programs are notoriously poorly written and often don't eliminate the "crap" that's all over the place (hence the name "C-Cleaner" incidentally, I've been told that the first "C" stands for "crap").
Anyway I've used it with good results. The only thing you have to watch is eliminating shared .dll and other files, although my way of dealing with them is to say "just delete everything" and if an application that remains doesn't work properly after that, I reinstall it. +1 to the Mac idea. My next machine undoubtedly will be.

I just loaded and ran the CCleaner on my own laptop. I suggest that you read all the tips and tutorials on their site before doing the same.
So far no problems. I elected not to do a backup of the registery when prompted for two reasons. 1. This is where it went wrong for my wife. 2. I have back up discs already.

I've used it like others. Here is a list of similar downloads from download.com (I recommend this site as being safe):
http://download.cnet.com/windows/utilities-and-operating-systems/?tag=rb_content;contentNav Currently I am trying out Advanced Systemcare from reading the editors recommendations. It is similar to CCleaner. |

I have my home development machine running Ubuntu and the family is on OSX 10.5 - honestly there is little difference between them...other than the price... |

I am an Ubuntu fan as well, but I also cannot agree with the statement that many things are 'plug and play without drama'. I'm sure it depends on what you are trying to install.
Actually I don't find much of anything plug and play with Ubuntu. Everything takes a lot of research and typing commands to get it working properly. Once you have it up and running - everything works great - and fast too!

I don't like any of these "registry cleaners" and I avoid them.

I've been using CrapCleaner for years. Just used it last night to clean up almost 2Gb off some chick's PC. SpyBot is a good companion for CC.
