Was staying at an old abandoned banana dock in Tulum, Mex. many years ago. The cost per night was 50 cents for a sort of grass hut with a hammock. An old man and lady ran a place to eat there (I won't call it a restaurant) where you could buy cinnamon tea, beans, tortillas and eggs (fixed any way you wanted them) for breakfast - same for lunch - same for dinner. Price 50 cents (6 pesos - peso was 12 1/2/dollar at the time). One day I saw a the owner & a couple of guys starring into a black plastic trash bag. I went over & looked. Seemed to be about 4 huge, dead rats in the bottom. I asked what they were & they answered "tepesquintle." The next day the owner changed the eggs on the chalk board menu to "tepesquintle." I asked for some, and it tasted OK. The fat wasn't too great. Anyway, nobody there would order any meals with it. In a couple of days the owner changed "tepesquintle" to "carne' (meat). Everybody ordered it & ate it all up. I still haven't found out what it was.
