I wonder what it's like......
to be lying there taking what you think may be your last few breaths. Am I dying? Is this how it ends?
fade to black............................................. ......................

Thats what your best bud is for. He gets in and "details" your place before the next of kin gets in.

i'm lying on the side of the road. the wheels of the bike next to me are still spinning. i can't breath. i tell myself that it's just the wind knocked out of me. on the bright side my helmet worked, and i can still think. i repeat "stay calm" probably more times than a calm person should. i finally inhale. so i figure i'm not going to die in the next two minutes. i cough. and my mouth is full of blood. turn my head to spit. can see my legs at an odd angle. try to move one, no go. this is unsettling. i snap alert, was i just unconscious? how to tell. definitely not as sharp as i was a moment ago. a car has pulled up. some guy with a cel phne is staring at me. have to keep reminding myself to breath. know i'm in shock. still very concerned with my legs. my toes, i can wiggle them. that's a good sign i figure. this time i feel the black out coming. am in an ambulance. the medic is hooking me up to an iv. broke the L3 and L4 transverse processors. F-ed up a bunch of other stuff. really blinding pain for a while. vicadin is for pussies. ask for toradol. took three weeks to stop pissing blood. was riding again a week later. strange the way the mind works. wonder if it wil be the same in some nursing home 50 years from now.

A lot of studies have suggested that the brain releases chemicals that do a very quick replay of your life. Other studies have suggested that we have an out-of-body experience. I've come close to dying a couple of times, but I wasn't lying there, so nothing of the sort occurred. What I mean was, the truck missed me (pedestrian), the train missed me (on a motorcycle next to the tracks), the gas that was running over my body (accident) didn't ignite.

I know what's it's like to come pretty close to dying with all the things that have happened to me. almost bled out after a lawn mower just about cut off my arm and leg at 5 yrs old. losing 20% of my body weight in 2 months with the radiation, chemo, oral mucositis and not eating anything for weeks/months at a time, I had one foot thru the door and on my way. I've been on the edge many times accidently and more than a few times not so accidently. if and when it happens again... not sure if I'd run from it or run for it.

BTDT. Being dead was the most incredible and wonderful feeling I have ever felt, better than anything you could possibly imagine. I was saddened to come back. Felt as if I got ripped off.
Obviously it didn't take but to this day I am not afraid of getting dead at all. I only worry about it because I need to make sure my family is taken care of. |

I'd rather burn-out then fade away...

My dad was done in by an empty refridgerater. Went to get a beer and there weren't any. Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurism at age 83. Ran out of beer and his heart blew up. Mom said he was dead before he hit the floor. Best way to go IMO.

Plus one, I watched my dad die, over years, and then agonizing weeks from emphysema.

I have had thoughts that I was close before.
Did some underwater cave diving when I was younger. No tanks, just snorkels and good breath hold. Got down deep once, went in, turned around and before I knew it my brain was telling me I was out of time. On my way back up I didn't think I was going to make it. You would be surprised how long that last breath feels like. A lot of things went through my mind as I was heading for the exit of the cave. I swam out and shot towards the surface like a missile but thought it was too late as I was a ways down. I could barely see the sun, a small green orb, shimmering above the water and thought that might be the last thing I see. If I would have passed out, even if I floated to the surface there wasn't anyone on topside to pull me out. Deep sadness was all I remember. I don't want to experience that ever again.

Luckily a friend had walked out to the backyard, dove in, pulled me out and started resuscitation and I finally came to. My first words were 'WTF are you doing?" I was pissed, it was so calm and peaceful, warm and jazz music and this guy screwed it up.

I ran over a bees nest with the lawnmower. Stung twice. Went into anaphylactic shock. Thought I was a goner. Tears formed in my eyes because I was thinking about my teenage son. ER personnel told my GF that if the meds didn't kick in, respiratory failure was imminent.
Not afraid at all. Sad and angry mostly. Went home 1/2 hour later just fine. |
